Martin District: Museums, Castles and Trails in the Veľká Fatra

Martin District combines Slovak cultural history with mountain landscapes and a variety of routes through the region. In Martin, you will find several museums with clearly distinct focuses; outside the city, routes lead to castles, valleys and the slopes of the Veľká Fatra. For your travel decision, the key question is therefore whether you would like to focus on museums and monuments, hiking and cycling, or family experiences.

Museums and Culture in Martin

The Múzeum Andreja Kmeťa is located in the first SNM building, dating from 1908. Its permanent exhibitions include Kmetianum on the work of Andrej Kmeť and Príroda Turca. By decree of the Government of the Slovak Republic dated 16 August 1994, the building was declared a national cultural monument. This museum location therefore combines its collections with an explicitly documented architectural and heritage history.

The Múzeum Martina Benku opened in 1972 in the house where the artist spent the last decade of his life. The museum includes the gallery as well as the artist’s furnished study, studio and bedroom. The Múzeum kultúry Čechov na Slovensku in the House of Notable Personalities Jiří Horák and Anna Horáková-Gašparíková offers a different cultural perspective. The Múzeum kultúry Rómov na Slovensku is located in the grounds of the Múzeum slovenskej dediny in Jahodnícke háje.

In the center of Martin lies the Literárne múzeum SNK in the first historic building of Matica slovenská. This building was declared a national cultural monument in 1961. The permanent exhibition presents the history of Slovak literature and book culture. Overall, there are 274 registered monuments in Martin District, so cultural exploration is not limited to a single type of museum.

Hiking, Cycling and Mountain Landscapes

The Jasenská Valley is a year-round recreational center on the Turiec side of the Veľká Fatra, below the northern slopes of Lysec. Lysec is 1,381 m high; from its main summit, panoramic views extend across this part of the Veľká Fatra. Another specific hiking option is the via ferrata trail to Martinskè hole: it is 4.8 km long, climbs 780 vertical meters and has an approximate ascent time of three hours. The trail begins at the terminus of public transport in Martin-Podstráne and ends at the blue hiking trail in the Bazová area near Martinskè hole.

The 22 km Martinské hole cycle route combines cycling with convenient access by public transport. It runs via Chata na Martinských holiach from Vrútky to Martin. At both endpoints, there is a bus stop, a railway station and a parking lot. Another signposted route to Blatnický Castle begins at the end of Blatnica and follows a yellow-marked educational trail through the Gaderská Valley.

Castles and Family Experiences

Sklabiňa Castle can be reached on foot from the village of Sklabinský Podzámok in about 15 minutes. Historically, after 1320 it became the seat of the Turiec County administration. Events take place at the castle, including a castle festival associated with the historic capture of the castle. For families, Yetiland in the Valčianska Valley offers a family amusement park with trampolines, inflatable castles, slides, rope obstacles and a water park.
