Košťany nad Turcom – Cultural Heritage and Cycling Routes

Košťany nad Turcom is situated on the floodplain of the Turiec River and combines a clearly documented local history with several cultural and historical buildings and two designated cycling routes. The first documentary records of Košťany nad Turcom date from 1323. At that time, the settlement was mentioned as “villa Coschan”. The abolition of serfdom in 1848 marked a turning point in its subsequent development: crafts and trade began to develop thereafter. At the same time, agriculture remained the inhabitants’ main occupation in the 18th and 19th centuries. The most prominent historic building is the Kaštieľ of Košťany nad Turcom. The country estate was created in the second half of the 18th century in the Rococo-Classical style by remodeling an older building. Another documented cultural monument is Kúria No. 214. It is listed as a national cultural monument and bears ÚZPF number 566/1. The house also became a meeting place for Slovak representatives of the national revival movement from Martin and the surrounding area. Another historic residence is Rodný dom Andreja Polonca, which was built in 1843.

Cycling between Turčianske Teplice and Martin

Košťany nad Turcom is explicitly included in two different cycling routes. The Znievska cyklocesta passes through the village on its route from Turčianske Teplice to Martin.
