Sučany: Educational Trail, Fatra Views and Cultural Monuments
Between the Educational Trail, Mountains and Culture
Sučany combines an easy-to-follow local tour with landscapes and cultural monuments that appeal to different interests. The Sučiansky historicko-náučný chodník is located in the built-up area of Sučany and follows a linear route through the village that can be used year-round. It can be explored on foot or by bicycle, is 3 km long and has an elevation difference of 24 m. Alongside longer excursions, this provides a clearly defined route for finding your way around the village.
Hiking, Cycling and Climbing
Sučany offers opportunities for hiking into the Sučianska dolina. Several cycling routes can also be accessed from Sučany. Those wishing to focus their stay more on a particular landscape or sporting activity will find several equipped climbing routes on Sučianska Skala. The upper areas of Sučianska Skala offer views of the Greater and Lesser Fatra. The rock therefore combines a specific connection to climbing with a landscape experience, while the educational trail is a shorter, linear route through the village.
The Sučianska dolina and Its Natural Features
The Sučianska dolina lies on the southern side of the Krivánska Malá Fatra. The Pod Rígľom nature reserve is located at the entrance to the valley. It covers 14.23 ha and is subject to the fifth level of protection. The Biely potok flows through the Sučianska dolina. The protected area is thus situated at the entrance to the valley, while the Biely potok runs through the valley and provides another natural feature within the Sučianska dolina.
Another natural feature is Lake Ontário, which lies in the cadastral area of Sučany. It is used for boating and is also considered an attractive area for anglers. The lake therefore represents a different form of stay from the paths in the Sučianska dolina or the climbing routes on Sučianska Skala.
Church, Pillory and Prehistoric Traces
The history of Sučany is also present in the village’s appearance and at its prominent cultural monuments. The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the oldest architectural monument in the area of Sučany. It was built in the last quarter of the 13th century and was originally Early Gothic. In 1964, the church was declared a national cultural monument.
The pillory of Sučany is a cultural monument from the first half of the 19th century. Sučianska Skala is also home to a fortified hilltop settlement that was inhabited by several cultures in prehistoric times. A stay in Sučany can therefore combine sacred architectural history, more recent local history and prehistoric traces without having to group them into a single sightseeing complex.
