Culture among castles, museums and wooden architecture

Dolný Kubín District combines prominent cultural sites with river landscapes, cycling paths and winter activities. The most distinctive landmark is Orava Castle: it stands in Oravský Podzámok on a rock above the Orava River. It was originally built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles, followed later by alterations in the Renaissance and Neo-Gothic styles. One specific detail is important for visitors: the ticket office is located below the castle rock; admission tickets cannot be purchased on the castle grounds themselves.

Kaštieľ Kubínyi offers a different historical perspective. The manor house dates from the 17th century and was extensively rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1750. Tours of the Renaissance and Baroque sections last about 40 minutes; advance reservation is required. The Múzeum šľachtických kočiarov a saní displays 21 exhibits in their original or restored condition. The wooden church of Leštiny is an articulary evangelical church dating from 1688 and has a wooden bell tower. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

The collections in Dolný Kubín also focus on different areas. The Oravská galéria is located in the Župný dom, dating from the 17th century, on Hviezdoslavovo námestie. Its five permanent exhibitions are dedicated to old art from the 15th to the 19th century, icons, Slovak art of the 20th century, woodcarving from Orava and traditional folk art. The Čaplovičova knižnica houses a book collection dating from the 14th to the 21st century and also displays maps, museum objects, manuscripts and incunabula. Florinov dom preserves a memorial room for Thea Herkeľ Florin with original furnishings, personal belongings and biographical visual and textual materials. In the Pamätný dom Martina Kukučína, you can see period-furnished rooms, editions of the writer’s works and examples of their film adaptations.

Cycling paths, lakes and experiences along the Orava

For active days, the Dolný Kubín–Oravský Podzámok–Leštiny cycling circuit offers a clearly defined connection: it starts and ends in Dolný Kubín and runs along gravel and asphalt paths. In Zázrivá, a nature trail passes eight information panels. It is 2 km long and can also be completed by bicycle. The Párnické jazerá consist of 21 lakes of varying sizes that formed after gravel extraction in the floodplain of the Orava River.

The Plavba plťou rafting trip offers another perspective on the river. It runs from Horná Lehota below Orava Castle to Oravský Podzámok and includes a one-hour trip with expert explanations about the history of rafting on the Orava. Tupá skala is home to a hillfort built and used by the Lusatian culture, as well as a cremation burial ground. Ostrá skala and Tupá skala have been designated a protected area since 1972, covering 22.30 ha and subject to the fourth level of protection.

More unusual activities include the 1,234-metre-long Kubínska Hoľa zipline and the cheese-making demonstration by Syrex Zázrivá. There, visitors can pull their own cheese strings, known as “vojky”, and weave their own korbáčiky.

Winter and water world

SKI PARK Kubínska hoľa has 14 km of downhill runs and 10 km of cross-country ski trails. In addition, there are nine downhill runs of all difficulty levels, a freeride zone and a snow park. The access road to Kubínska hoľa is paved and maintained so that snow chains are not required.

Aquarelax Dolný Kubín complements the offer with a water world featuring various water attractions. The summer outdoor area also includes a children’s pool, sports courts, a climbing wall and a rope park.
