Zázrivá – Nature, Culture and Mountain Landscapes

The municipality of Zázrivá extends across several mountain ranges of the Fatra-Tatra region and the Central Beskids: the Malá Fatra, Kysucká vrchovina and Oravská Magura. As a result, the range of options extends from a short nature trail to longer hikes and a designated cycling route.

Nature Trail, Hiking and Cycling

An accessible introduction to the landscape is the 2 km-long nature trail in Zázrivá-Dolina. It begins at the entrance to the rescue station, follows a circular route with a shelter and benches, and returns to the rescue station; at a moderate pace, it can be completed in about an hour. The eight information panels cover the activities of the rescue station and the eco-centre, the region's animals and plants, birds of prey, Zázrivá, Malá Fatra National Park, the trees of the surrounding area, as well as nature conservation and tourism.

If you are looking for a longer hike, a route from Zázrivá via Medzirozsutce to Veľký Rozsutec is listed as taking 3 hours and 20 minutes. For cyclists, the 20 km Terchová–Zázrivá–Hoľa route passes through Zázrivá. The two options have different focuses: the nature trail combines a manageable circular route with information, while the longer hike and cycling route place the village within larger mountain and route networks.

Nature Among Meadows, Forests and an Eco-Garden

The landscape of Zázrivá includes numerous meadows, pastures, waterfalls, ponds and streams. They are predominantly surrounded by spruce and beech forests as well as dwarf pine. The rescue station in Zázrivá has a particularly strong connection with nature: it is dedicated to rescuing injured, weakened or otherwise impaired animals, especially birds, from throughout Slovakia. In the eco-garden of Zázrivá, visitors can see various plant and tree species, a wetland pond, nesting boxes, drinking stations, and areas for insects and reptiles.

Wooden Houses, Church and Zázrivský Korbáčik

Wooden houses are part of the local character and are among the sights of Zázrivá. The Church of the Virgin Mary dates from 1928. The Zázrivské dni event also offers a lively cultural connection; held at the end of July, it includes a cultural programme, korbáčik-making competitions, farmsteads, craftspeople, a fair with people in traditional dress, and a procession.

Zázrivá is also associated with its own culinary tradition. Zázrivský korbáčik is traditionally made almost exclusively by hand: curd cheese is steamed in hot water, pulled into strands and then braided into a korbáčik. According to tradition, this speciality has been made in Zázrivá since the second half of the 19th century. At Salaš Zázrivá, there is a demonstration of the traditional production of fresh and smoked sheep's cheese. Salaš Syrex can be visited year-round; visitors can pet the horses there.

Ski Centres in and Around Zázrivá

Zázrivá also offers two different options for a winter sports stay: Dolná Plešivá is a ski centre directly in Zázrivá. The Kozinec ski centre is located in Zázrivá-Havrania and has numerous slopes that are more suitable for experienced skiers. The choice therefore ranges from a ski centre directly in the village to an option with an explicitly more demanding profile.
