Dolný Kubín – Culture, Nature and Winter Experiences in Orava

Dolný Kubín combines Orava’s historical heritage with culture, active pursuits and year-round leisure activities. The Orava River flows through the town and divides it into two parts. Dolný Kubín lies in the southwest of the Orava Highlands, on its border with Orava Magura. This makes it a destination where urban history, literature, nature experiences and sporting activities come together within a compact thematic area for your trip planning.

Historic Centre and Museums

Hviezdoslav Square is the most important medieval urban monument in Dolný Kubín. Several Renaissance and Baroque burgher houses line the square. One of the prominent buildings is the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the town’s oldest cultural and historical monument. Its tower dates from the 14th century, while the late Gothic altar dates from the beginning of the 16th century. The interior also contains a Renaissance epitaph of the Zmeškalovci family from 1622.

The Župný dom dates from the last third of the 17th century and houses the Orava Gallery with its permanent exhibitions. There you can see Slovak visual art of the 20th century, works by the Orava woodcarver Štefan Siváň, and a selection of traditional folk art. Another focus is the Hviezdoslav Museum, considered the oldest literary museum in Slovakia. It presents the book collections of Vavrinec Čaplovič as well as the life and work of Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav.

The public exhibition of the Čaplovič Library introduces the scholar and private book collector Vavrinec Čaplovič and presents the fields of knowledge represented in his historical collection. The holdings include manuscripts, incunabula dating from before 1500, and valuable art and map collections. The Florin House currently hosts an exhibition devoted to the social sciences and natural history, prepared by the P. O. Hviezdoslav Orava Museum. The T. H. Florin Memorial Room has been open to the public there since 1997 and contains the original furnishings, collections of poetry, personal belongings and biographical information.

Literary Tradition and Historical Traces

Hviezdoslavov Kubín is a nationwide competition and showcase of the artistic recitation of poetry and prose. The programme also includes recitation groups as well as children’s, youth and adult poetry theatre. The tradition has existed since 1954; the 72nd edition took place in Dolný Kubín from 16 to 20 June 2026. A quieter historical site is the Dolný Kubín Jewish Cemetery near the historic centre. It is open to the public on request and preserves original gravestones. The oldest dates from 1857.

Educational Trail, Cycle Route and Year-Round Leisure Activities

The Kuzmínovo educational trail begins at the Jewish Cemetery in Dolný Kubín. It leads along the access road to the Kuzmínovo cottage and then to two shelters beside the cross-country ski trails. Eight information panels cover Dolný Kubín, the Kuzmínovo area and the animals, medicinal plants and fungi found there. There are also two interactive panels for children. For longer routes, the municipal cycle network offers the 43-kilometre Pod Kuzmínovom–Medzihradné route.

The Kuzmínovo leisure centre has illuminated cross-country and downhill ski slopes. It is located 400 metres from Dolný Kubín’s historic square. Another option for a stay regardless of the season is the aquapark, which is open year-round and has pools, a wild-water river, whirlpools and slides. The facilities also include a sauna world, a spacious fitness centre, and a massage and rehabilitation centre.
