Párnica: Lakes, Crafts and Nature in the Little Fatra

Párnica lies on the southwestern edge of the Orava Highlands and at the northeastern foothills of the Little Fatra. The village stretches along the Orava River on both banks of the Zázrivka stream. This location combines a diverse lake landscape with regional craft and local history, as well as winter sports facilities whose slopes lie in the valley of the Zázrivka River in the Little Fatra National Park.

The Párnické Lakes and Their Educational Trails

The Párnické Lakes comprise 21 lakes of varying sizes. They formed in the Orava floodplain as a result of gravel extraction between 1957 and 1997. Today, the Párnické Lakes ecosystem is home to beavers. Párnica therefore features a landscape whose present appearance has emerged from a clearly defined history of use.

The educational trail around the Párnické Lakes is 1.5 kilometres long and takes about 30 minutes at a brisk pace. Its starting point is at the bus stop in Párnica, where there is an information board and signposts. The route is also suitable for cyclists. At the EKOcentrum Pod Širákom, there is an outdoor classroom with an interactive table about local wildlife. Signposts lead from there to a fox educational trail and into a beaver bay.

Museum, Blue-Printing and Local History

Párnica’s first community museum is called Izba starých materí. It comprises a rural room, a barn and a room with historical documents, including photographs. A total of 230 exhibits are on display. They were loaned or donated by residents and by people originally from Párnica. The museum therefore not only preserves objects, but also shows the local context from which the collection comes.

The first known written mention of Párnica dates from 1420. At that time, the village was referred to as “Villa Parnice” and as a subject community of Orava Castle. Traditional local crafts included wagon-making, carpentry and woodcarving. At Ateliér Rabada, visitors can take part in workshops where they design and make their own original blue-print pattern. A guided tour of Ateliér Rabada also provides an opportunity to learn about the blue-printing process.

Another distinctive building is the Protestant church in Párnica. The monumental church was built in 1926–1927 to a design by the architect J. Burjan and features echoes of Cubist decorative elements. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The altarpiece was created by M. Mitrovský and is dated 1928.

Thermal Spring and Winter Sports

Párnica is home to a thermal mineral spring. Šport centrum Lučivná SKI is also located in Párnica; its downhill runs are situated in the Little Fatra National Park in the valley of the Zázrivka River. Facilities include a ski school and ski and snowboard rental. The black Čierna run is 1,400 metres long, has an elevation difference of 504 metres and an average gradient of 36 percent.
