Vyšný Kubín: Culture, Rocks and Views over Orava

Church and Literary Traces

The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity is a single-nave religious building on late Gothic foundations dating from the 15th century. Its main altar features a statue of the Holy Trinity from the 15th century. The building's history and furnishings therefore represent not just a single historical impression, but two distinct details to look out for during your visit.

The Arpádovský Manor House contains a permanent exhibition on local history, P. O. Hviezdoslav and other personalities connected with Vyšný Kubín. The “Priadka” monument is dedicated to the mother of P. O. Hviezdoslav. Another monument in the village centre marks the site where the poet's birthplace once stood. The historical wording is important here: what you can see is the marked former site, not the birthplace itself.

Margita Figuli is also present in the village landscape. A commemorative plaque bearing the inscription “House of Youth of Margita Figuli” marks the house where the writer spent part of her life. Together, these places form a literary focus revealed through an exhibition, a monument and a commemorative plaque.

Archaeology and Rocky Landscape

The Mokrý kút Archaeological Park presents reconstructed archaeological architecture and settlement structures. It is complemented by replicas of archaeological objects from specific periods of the archaeological cultures represented in the region. The visit follows a clear framework: the archaeological park can be visited year-round by prior telephone appointment.

Another side of the municipality is represented by the protected site of Ostrá skala and Tupá skala. It includes striking rock formations and several smaller caves. Both Skalas are also archaeological sites with remains of fortified hillforts. From Tupá skala, you can see almost the entire lower Orava.

Manor House and Guided Tour

The restored Kaštieľ Kubínyi manor house has been opened to the general public. During a guided tour, you will visit both the Renaissance and Baroque sections. In suitable weather conditions, the tour also includes a walk through the English park. This distinguishes the visit from the freely accessible traces of the village and landscape: here, the focus is on a guided sequence through different parts of the building and, depending on the weather, through the park.
