Srňacie: Folk Architecture and Trails
Accommodation in Srňacie
Srňacie combines preserved folk architecture with distinctive walking experiences. Elements of 19th-century folk architecture shape the built character of the village, while Route B crosses Pustá poľana, offering views of Choč, and then passes through the village. A roughly half-hour walk from Medzihradné offers a second way to explore the area, this time through forest and mountain meadows. Two distinct interests are therefore at the heart of planning a trip: the local architectural heritage and a specific walking experience.
Folk Architecture and Local History
Several log houses and traditional granaries are among Srňacie’s characteristic traditional buildings. Elements of 19th-century folk architecture have been preserved here; several of the log houses are currently privately owned. The different forms can be viewed together as part of the local architectural heritage, without reducing it to a single building.
An open wooden bell tower with a single bell adds another building type to the log houses and granaries. Based on its overall appearance and architectural details, the bell tower can be dated to the second half of the 19th century. The first written mention of Srňacie dates to 1548. These details mark different historical layers: one gives the first written mention of the village, while the other provides an architectural dating of the bell tower.
During the Second World War, Srňacie was a communications centre for the lower Orava region, and the Signál partisan group operated there. The village’s history therefore extends beyond its preserved buildings to include the wartime period in the lower Orava region.
Walk and Route B
From the end of Medzihradné, a roughly 30-minute walk through forest and mountain meadows leads to Srňacie. Use the approximate duration as a guide; trail conditions may vary. The section of Route B crossing Pustá poľana offers beautiful views of Choč before continuing through Srňacie. Visibility may depend on the weather. On the return to Dolný Kubín, Route B also passes through Srňacie. Municipal route information was updated in 2017; check the current route before setting out.
The reconstruction of the access road to the Srňacie district improved access for drivers and cyclists. Road conditions and traffic regulations may change; check them before travelling. For planning purposes, it is worth considering this road connection separately from the roughly half-hour walking route from Medzihradné: they concern different ways of travelling and provide different points of reference.
Srňacie as a Place to Stay
Start by considering the purpose of your trip and how closely you want to connect with the area. The trails and historic buildings offer different points of interest, and you do not have to combine them into one itinerary.
