Čadca – Nature, Culture and Trails in Kysuce

Čadca provides a diverse gateway to Kysuce: unusual geological formations, regional history, art and winter trails come together here. If you do not want to limit your trip to a single attraction, Čadca and the places mentioned offer a variety of experiences – from a train ride on a historic railway line to exploring family history and modern art.

Nature, Views and Active Trails

A striking natural destination is Klokočovské skálie. The geological rock outcrop forms a rock escarpment about 300 m long and 15 to 25 m high, with spherical weathering. The site is designated as a protected nature reserve; stone spheres can also be found in Megonky, where they are located in a protected natural monument. From Jarošovci, you can reach Klokočovské skálie via a marked trail. You should allow about an hour for the visit.

The observation tower on Surovina offers views of the Oščadnica Valley, Krásno nad Kysucou and Čadca. A blue hiking trail runs directly by the tower and continues to Veľká Rača. Another clearly defined route is the Javorníky ridge trail, which ends in Čadca and is about 64 km long. In winter, the Beskydsko-javornícka cross-country skiing trail adds to the range of activities; it is groomed during this season and is suitable for tourists and mountain visitors of all ages.

The Korňanský oil spring can also be included when choosing destinations, without requiring a long hike: it is accessible by bus, while the spring pond is about 300 m from the road.

Museums with a Regional Focus

At the Múzeum kysuckej dediny, you can take a train ride on a preserved section of the historic switchback railway. This combines a museum visit with a tangible insight into the region’s transport history. At the Vlastivedné múzeum in Krásno nad Kysucou, the main attraction is a life-size replica of a female mammoth, based on fossil remains found nearby.

The museum also presents a natural history exhibition with specimens from the animal and plant life of northwestern Slovakia. The permanent exhibition Otvorený depozitár expands this focus with collection objects from the Kysucké múzeum covering archaeology, ethnography and history, as well as topics such as household life, textile-fibre processing, wirework, sacred art, military affairs, furniture and other crafts. Those interested in the past of the town and its surroundings can search online in an exhibition on the history of Čadca and the surrounding area for emigrants, their own ancestors and legionnaires. The Horelický poklad exhibition displays a selection of 250 silver coins.

Architecture, Art and Living Traditions

Stará Bystrica is home to an astronomical clock regarded as the largest wooden sculpture in Slovakia. The Radoľa manor house is the only surviving Renaissance residence of the lesser nobility in the Kysuce region. It houses permanent and temporary exhibitions; lectures and creative workshops are also held there. The Kysucká galéria in Oščadnica offers a different cultural focus. As a regional gallery, it concentrates on presenting, researching and collecting modern art, including works by artists from the Kysuce region and prominent Slovak artists.

Živčáková is a Marian pilgrimage site with the Cathedral of the Temple of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, springs and pilgrimages held annually in spring and autumn. The amateur theatre competition Palárikova Raková takes place every year in Raková. The cultural spectrum therefore ranges from sacred sites and historic architecture to exhibitions, theatre and contemporary art.
