Stará Bystrica: Orloj, Kysuce and Trails

The Slovenský orloj makes Stará Bystrica a special destination in Kysuce: the Orloj is the first and only one of its kind in Slovakia. Together with historic religious buildings, a Jewish cemetery, cross-border trails and viewpoints, it creates a place where culture and active exploration come together.

The Slovenský orloj and remarkable landmarks of local history

The astronomical data of the Slovenský orloj are specifically adapted to the geographical location of Stará Bystrica. It is the only one of the existing Orlojs in the world to display the so-called true solar time. If you would like to see more than just the façade, you can view the mechanisms and the astrolabe up close in the machine room.

A stone cross stands by the church; it was made in 1834 by the master craftsman Jozef Kuric, who came from Stará Bystrica. It is considered an authentic testimony to regional history and stands in its original location. A striking detail is the halo behind Christ's head: it is made of 23.5-carat gold leaf.

The Jewish cemetery is also part of the town's historical heritage. It was established by the Jewish community in the 18th century. A symbolic memorial lists the names of the deceased on one side and the names of the Jewish residents of the municipality of Stará Bystrica who were deported on the other. During the restoration, the focus was on preserving the surviving gravestones; their original orientation was retained.

Nature trail, cycling routes and a hike to Bobovec

The Beskydská zelená cesta begins in the Slezákovci settlement in the municipality of Stará Bystrica. The cross-border educational trail is 32.6 km long, includes 30 stations and has a stated walking duration of 16 hours. It can be explored independently and is intended for pedestrians and cyclists. The route can be used in summer and winter. There are two rest areas in Stará Bystrica along the Kysucká cyklomagistrála.

For a shorter cycling connection, there is a route from the centre of Stará Bystrica to the Kysucká cyklomagistrála. It begins at the square in Stará Bystrica, leads through the municipality and ends at a cycle path. The Cyklotrasa hrebeňom Kysúc cycling route follows the Kysucká cyklomagistrála towards Stará Bystrica. As an option, it offers a detour to the Slovenský orloj and the reconstructed town square.

A gentle, yellow-marked hiking trail leads from the Slovenský orloj at Rínok sv. Michala to the observation tower on Bobovec. The route is 2 km long and takes about one hour on foot. The 16 m-high tower has stood since 2011 on the cadastral boundary of the municipalities of Stará Bystrica and Radôstka. From the top, there are views of the Lesser Fatra, Martinské Hole, Veľká Rača and Lysá Hora in the Czech Republic.

Further cultural highlights

The traditional celebrations of Sovereignty Day have been associated with Stará Bystrica in the Kysuce region for many years. What began as a local event developed into a nationwide occasion. Another distinctive feature is the Zbojnícka bašta with its so-called falling terrace, which symbolizes the mountainous landscape of Kysuce.

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel was built in 1892 in the Neo-Gothic style and is one of the most important landmarks of the municipality and the parish of Stará Bystrica. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The Lány roadside chapel is a Baroque-Classical chapel built at the end of the 18th century and extensively reconstructed in 1822. Its interior contains folk-style wood carvings from the early 19th century, including depictions of Ecce Homo and the Pietà. The chapel is in very good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.
