Vysoká Nad Kysucou: Bible Garden, Circular Trail and Memorial Sites

Vysoká Nad Kysucou combines religious tradition, hiking, space history and Jewish heritage. A wide range of very different reasons to visit is available for planning your trip: a thematically distinctive Bible Garden, the Okruh Vysokou nad Kysucou circular trail, the Church of St Matthew the Evangelist dating from 1732, and several memorial sites.

The Bible Garden and its special visiting arrangements

The Bible Garden is a themed garden with trees and shrubs mentioned in the Bible. Its planting includes all the trees of Paradise and the most important plants of the Holy Land. The garden is located near the parish church; access is from the car park in front of the post office.

Careful planning is important for a visit: the Bible Garden can only be visited with a guide, and the guided tour must be arranged in advance.

Hiking along the Javorníky ridge

The Okruh Vysokou nad Kysucou circular trail starts at the municipal office in Vysoká Nad Kysucou. From there, it passes through the settlement of Vrchrieka on a red-marked hiking trail over the Javorníky ridge towards Semeteš. The trailhead is therefore clearly identified, while the route describes a connection between the settlement of Vrchrieka, the Javorníky ridge and Semeteš.

The route is particularly distinctive as an itinerary option if you would like to structure your stay around a marked trail and a crossing of the landscape. No length, duration or elevation gain is specified for this trail.

Church, space history and the STOPA monument

The Church of St Matthew the Evangelist dates from 1732. The E. A. Cernan Memorial Room in the municipal office building in Vysoká Nad Kysucou offers a completely different cultural focus. It contains a thin segment of the burned heat shield of Apollo 10 from 1969, as well as a piece of the outer shell of Apollo 17.

The STOPA monument is also related to space history. It depicts a lunar dome bearing imprints of spacesuit boots. Specific visiting hours apply to the memorial room: on weekdays, it can be visited from 07:15 to 15:15; on other days, visits are possible by prior arrangement.

Jewish heritage in Nižný Kelčov

Preserved remains of a Jewish cemetery are located above the municipality. They lie in Nižný Kelčov above the railway station and are among the last memorial sites commemorating the once numerous Jewish community in Kysuce. The site therefore explicitly refers to a former community and should not be understood as indicating a present-day community.

Pilgrimage to the chapel on Kyčera

Another religious occasion is the annual pilgrimage to the chapel dedicated to Saint Anne on Mount Kyčera in Vysoká Nad Kysucou. It takes place on the Sunday around the feast day of Saint Anne. During the pilgrimage, the pilgrims carry a statue of the Virgin Mary. The date is therefore linked to an annually recurring period around this feast day.
