Skalité: Cycling and Sacred Buildings

Skalité combines a clearly described cycling route with sacred buildings and a historical connection to transport. If you would like to combine cycling, local history, and specific cultural monuments, you will find various points of interest here: from a 6.3 km route above the municipality to the church of Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa, which has been preserved to this day.

Cycling between the border, country lanes, and forest

The “8473 – Nad Skalitým” cycling route begins at the Polish border in the Mýto area. Its starting point is at an intersection with a blue cycling tourist route. The route is 6.3 km long, has elevation figures of 178 m/341 m, and is rated REKREA in terms of difficulty. Its surface alternates between asphalt, forest paths, and country lanes.

Above the municipality of Skalité, the route runs along country lanes and forest paths and offers beautiful views. The 6.3 km route contrasts with the 60 km main cycling trail from Kysuce. It runs through Čadca, Skalité, Oščadnica, Krásno nad Kysucou, Stará Bystrica, and Vychylovka, making it almost ten times as long as “8473 – Nad Skalitým”. The difference in length between the two routes is 53.7 km. The shorter route remains above Skalité, while the main cycling trail connects several places in Kysuce.

Church, Calvary, and Chapel

One of the prominent buildings in Skalité is Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa, a masonry church that has been preserved to this day. Construction began around 1787. An old document found during the restoration of the tower records that the church had already been completed in 1793. The two years therefore describe different construction phases: the beginning of construction and the completion documented in the records. The interval between the start of construction and completion is approximately six years. The building therefore dates from the late 18th century.

Another clearly dated site is Kalvária Sedembolestnej Panny Márie in Skalité. It was completed in August 1941. Kaplnka Povýšenia sv. kríža is located in Skalité-Kudlov. In front of this chapel stands a cross dating from 1835. The cross is 106 years older than Kalvária Sedembolestnej Panny Márie, which was completed in August 1941. In Skalité, you therefore encounter sacred buildings with different historical dates, without needing to combine their construction periods into a single building history.

Historical connection to the railway

The entire railway line from Čadca to Zwardoń is part of the area’s transport history. It was put into operation on November 3, 1884. The railway’s commissioning was 91 years after the completion of the church and 49 years after 1835. This date places the line in its historical context and complements a visit to the area with a look at the development of transport connections in the surrounding region. It does not imply any current timetables or operating information.
