Turzovka: Živčáková, Culture and Bukovina

Turzovka is shaped by several clearly distinguishable themes: the Kysuca catchment area, Živčáková with its footpaths, the tradition of wire-working, and sports and winter activities. This makes it a place where landscape, culture and active pursuits can be combined in different ways.

Živčáková: Two Paths and an Access Road

Živčáková can be reached from Turzovka via two footpaths. One starts in Vyšný koniec, the other in Závodie. The ascent to Živčáková from Turzovka or Korňa takes about an hour. If you choose the access route from Korňa, a paved access road leads to Živčáková; by car, parking spaces are available near the Church of Our Lady, Mother of the Church. This means that different ways of visiting the same landscape area are available side by side: two described footpaths, as well as an access road from Korňa with parking near the church.

In terms of landscape, Živčáková belongs to the Turzovská vrchovina uplands. It lies on the boundary of the cadastral areas of Turzovka, Korňa and Vysoká nad Kysucou. This precise location also makes the mountain a reference point for several municipalities, without requiring a shared route or a single access point to be inferred from it.

Pilgrimage Site and Cultural Traces

Since 2015, the Church of Our Lady, Mother of the Church has been part of the Živčáková pilgrimage site. It was solemnly consecrated on 4 October; bishops from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, as well as approximately 15,000 pilgrims, attended the consecration. The church is therefore an independent cultural and religious focal point of Živčáková.

A specific monument in the town centre also commemorates regional history. Turzovka is one of the centres of the traditional wire-working craft. This is commemorated by the bronze monument “Drotár a džarek” by Miroslav Cipár. This view of local culture is complemented by the Turzovanka folklore group, which has preserved the songs and customs of Veľká Turzovka and Kysuce for 23 years.

Turzovka also hosts the traditional Beskydské slávnosti folklore festival. It has been held for more than five decades; the 53rd edition was described as one of the most significant folklore events in the region. Another historical attraction is the Roman Catholic Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It dates from 1759 and is registered as a national cultural monument.

Sports in Závodie and Winter Activities in Bukovina

The Areál športu a oddychu sports and leisure complex in Turzovka-Závodie has a 42 m × 22 m multipurpose playing field that is covered by an air-supported dome year-round. Handball, volleyball, football tennis, minifootball and tennis are available there. During the summer months, pétanque, Russian bowling, tennis on clay courts, badminton and mini-golf are added. Rides by kick scooter or quad bike are also mentioned. The range therefore extends from ball and racket sports to other leisure activities, without all options being tied to the same season.

For winter, the Bukovina ski centre is relevant. It is located 2 km from the centre of Turzovka, in the Kysuce region, and has two ski lifts measuring 500 m and 600 m in length. The slopes are suitable for beginner and intermediate skiers and are groomed daily; a floodlit slope allows skiing in the evening.
