Krasno Nad Kysucou

Krásno nad Kysucou combines sacred art, regional history, and routes through the Kysuce landscape. The town offers both prominent cultural monuments and practical starting points for hikes and cycling tours. Particularly characteristic are the Stations of the Cross, the historic settlements, and the cycling connections that lead from the town center in various directions.

Stations of the Cross, Church, and Historic Bridges

The Calvary consists of a Stations of the Cross route with 14 stations. It features striking metal sculptures by sculptor and architect Stanislav Mikovčák. Historical metal objects were incorporated into the wrought-iron sculptures; QR codes explain the symbolic representations, from the judgment of Jesus Christ to his burial. The Stations of the Cross is therefore not only a religious path but also an example of an unusual combination of art, materials, and local history.

The Roman Catholic Parish Church of St. Andrew was built in 1861 and is considered the largest church in Kysuce because of its length. The church houses a 113-centimeter-high Late Gothic wooden sculpture from the late 15th century. It was created by an unknown master, restored in 2009–2010, and classified as a cultural monument. A bridge built in 1891 by the Wayss company bears a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. At Most lásky a priateľstva, couples in love attach padlocks to the bridge railing and throw the keys into the river.

Cycling Routes and Mountain Settlements

The Bystrická cyklomagistrála begins in the center of Krásno nad Kysucou. The Kysucká cyklotrasa leads toward Dunajov and Oščadnica and as far as Milówka in Poland. At the intersection of the two cycling routes stands the Kolesá radosti sculpture. It is almost five meters high and is made of mill scale, wheels, and other materials from a recycling center. The Bystrická cyklomagistrála also offers stops for a refreshment break or a sightseeing stop.

Along the cycling route by the Bystrica River and the Kysucká cycling route toward Oščadnica are Tobruk-type concrete bunkers, also known as Ringstand 58c. The German army built them at the end of 1944 to defend the road through the Bystrica Valley. The Šustkov–Jedličník settlement along the cycling route toward Bystrická dolina provides a different accent. Beside the route stands a small brick chapel from 1998; a Holy Mass is traditionally held there in summer.

The U Jantov settlement comprises wooden and brick houses, preserved wooden farm buildings, a holy image, a small altar, and a stone cross. A Stations of the Cross route approximately 600 meters long leads directly to the U Jantov lookout tower. The first floor houses a gallery with information about Krásno nad Kysucou. From U Jantov, a forest path also leads beneath Vojtov vrch to hiking trails in the Javorníky Mountains.

Museum and Landscape Experience

For a visit with a stronger focus on cultural history, the Vlastivedné Museum presents a natural history exhibition with exhibits on the fauna and flora of northwestern Slovakia. The Kysucká Odyssey exhibition traces the history of Kysuce from the earliest mammoth hunters through the era of Juraj Turzo to the space age and includes an interactive audiovisual guide. A systematic geological collection also provides an overview of the world of minerals.

Outside the town, the Krásňanské osady convey another side of the region. During a hike, you are accompanied by the local fauna and flora as well as exceptional peace and seclusion; the settlements are also accessible to mountain bikers. The Vrabčiarne are tourist shelters in the landscape of the Kysucké Beskydy and the Javorníky Mountains. In this way, Krásno nad Kysucou combines historical sightseeing, cycling routes, and paths into the mountain landscape without limiting the town to just one type of trip.
