Discover Oščadnica: Mountains, Winter Sports and Kysuce Culture

Oščadnica combines winter sports at Veľká Rača with hiking trails, cycling routes and a remarkably rich cultural landscape.

Winter Sports and Mountain Landscapes Around Veľká Rača

Snowparadise connects the Dedovka, Marguška and Lalíky areas and has 14 km of ski slopes. Snowparadise Veľká Rača Oščadnica offers skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and ski touring. This means that winter sports are not limited to a single discipline. Veľká Rača is also important for understanding the landscape: the summit is the highest in the Kysuce region and part of a National Nature Reserve.

Outside winter, the mountain world can also be experienced along a clearly described route. The hiking route from Oščadnica-Dedovka via Veľká Rača is 7.2 km long, has an elevation gain of 594 m and is classified as moderate. The Alpincoaster is a separate attraction: it starts next to the mountain station of the cable car in Dedovka and ends at the same place. It reaches speeds of up to 40 km/h.

Culture Between the Kaštieľ, Gallery and Pilgrimage

The Kaštieľ in Oščadnica and the adjacent forest park were declared National Cultural Monuments of the Slovak Republic in 1973. Local cycling route 2429 connects the centre of Oščadnica with the Kaštieľ, adding a distinct cultural element to the area's local orientation.

The focus at the Kysucká galéria is on modern art. The regional gallery currently manages more than 3,000 works of art, offering a different way of experiencing the region than its mountain and winter sports attractions. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary also forms part of the town's historical character; it was first mentioned in 1804.

A special event in the religious and regional calendar is the Kysuce pilgrimage to the Calvary in Oščadnica. It has taken place for several decades on the Sunday after the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on 15 August. Anyone wishing to understand Oščadnica not only as a starting point for activities but also through its inherited traditions will find a clear cultural connection here.

Cycling Routes and Regional Orientation

The most important cycling route in Kysuce runs through Čadca, Skalité, Oščadnica, Krásno nad Kysucou, Stará Bystrica and Vychylovka and is 60 km long. This route places Oščadnica within a broader regional itinerary. It should be distinguished from local cycling route 2429, which connects the centre with the Kaštieľ.

An Educational Trail About the History of the Border Region

The educational trail “Po stopách zbojníkov v pohraničí” has five information boards in Oščadnica. At thematic stations, it presents the history of robbers and bandits. Together with the Kaštieľ, the gallery and the pilgrimage, the trail expands the image of the town with a narrative and regional perspective.
