Raková: Nature Trails, Culture and Palárikova Raková

Raková combines protected mountain landscapes, marked trails and a distinctive cultural history. The main attractions include Veľký Polom with its nature reserve, the Medvedia skala rock formation and the annual Palárikova Raková event. This gives the town various points of interest for your trip to Slovakia: you can plan a hike to a protected peak, follow a route from the town centre or explore the theatre, architecture and life of its namesake, Ján Palárik.

Veľký Polom and the trails around Raková

The Veľký Polom nature reserve is located in the cadastral area of Raková. Its 1,067 m-high summit is protected as a nature reserve on both sides of the border, with the highest, fifth level of protection. This classification is an essential part of the landscape’s character: the summit represents not merely an elevation, but a particularly strictly protected natural area.

A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Raková-Korcháňovci to Veľký Polom; it is approximately 5.4 km long and takes about two hours. This means that a marked hike leads from a specific part of the town to the protected 1,067 m-high summit. For a different perspective, the Cyklotrasa vzájomnosti cycle route begins in the centre of Raková. It leads around Medvedia skala to the Tetřev viewpoint in the Czech Republic, connecting Raková with a destination beyond the Slovak border.

Medvedia skala itself is a preserved rock monolith approximately the size of a multi-storey house. From Raková-Korcháň, the access route is considered easy and well marked. The rock formation is thus incorporated into the course of this cross-border route.

Culture between the Church, Memorial Room and Theatre

Raková’s cultural heritage includes the Neo-Gothic church Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie. Its Neo-Gothic design draws on Gothic forms, although the church was built in the 19th century. The altarpiece was created five years after the construction work was completed. The church was built between 1870 and 1874 according to a design by the architect J. Zítko. The altarpiece depicting the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was painted by J. B. Klemens and created in 1879. The architecture and furnishings therefore point to two different moments in the church’s history.

The Ján Palárik Memorial Room is located in the cultural centre building. The exhibition “JÁN PALÁRIK – ŽIVOT A DIELO” is displayed there. The exhibition focuses on the life and work of its namesake, Ján Palárik. If you would like to visit this place, you must arrange an appointment with the Raková Municipal Office in advance. The memorial room is therefore a cultural attraction that explicitly requires prior coordination.

Every year, Raková also hosts Palárikova Raková, a competition and showcase of amateur theatre groups. The event complements the town’s place-related culture of remembrance with a recurring theatre event.
