Bytča District

Bytča District combines historic sites with the distinctive landscapes of the Javorníky and Súľovské skaly. Here you can find cultural monuments in Bytča, castles and rocky landscapes, educational trails with viewpoints, and several opportunities for cycling, cross-country skiing and activities on the Váh. This allows you to explore the region according to your interests, whether cultural, scenic or sporting.

Culture between Bytča and the surrounding towns

In the centre of Bytča stands Bytčiansky kaštieľ, also known as Bytčiansky zámok. The building near the Petrovička watercourse is designated a national cultural monument. A fortified water castle already stood on this site in the 13th century; the new castle complex was built between 1571 and 1574. The ensemble includes the Sobášny palác, whose exterior is entirely decorated using the sgraffito technique.

The Synagóga in Bytča is also part of the town’s historic setting. It acquired its present neo-Romanesque appearance through the activities of the Jewish religious community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is occasionally used for cultural purposes. The Múzeum drotárie offers another perspective on regional history: it is open on weekdays by appointment and was established as a reconstruction of one of the oldest buildings in the centre of Veľké Rovné, based on a surviving historical photograph.

Remains of a cave bear and traces of human settlement from the Stone Age were found in Šarkania diera. Hričov Castle was built between 1254 and 1265. The 3.3 km route to Hričov Castle begins in Hričovské Podhradie and has an elevation gain of 228 m.

Javorníky, viewpoints and nature reserve

The Javorníky Mountains border the area around Bytča to the west. They offer year-round recreational opportunities, including educational trails, cycling routes, cross-country ski trails and ski facilities. An educational trail in Bytča-Hrabové ends at a lookout tower. From this lookout tower above Bytča, you can see the Strážovské vrchy, Súľovské skaly, the Javorníky and Bytča.

Súľovské skaly are located about 10 km from Bytča. They are a national nature reserve within the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. At the start of the educational trail there is a paid car park on the main road. Another natural attraction is Hlbocký vodopád, where travertine occurs.

Cycling, winter trails and water on the Váh

For a cycling tour, the Kysucká cyklomagistrála begins in Kotešová at the junction with the Vážska cyklomagistrála. Its first section runs through Veľké Rovné to the Semeteš mountain pass. In winter, the Beskydsko-Javornícka trail runs through the Javorníky Mountains. Its elevations range from 685 to 1,050 m, and the main route is 50 km long. In the Bytča area, rafting takes place on the Váh using rafts and boats.

Súľovský hrad and other local landmarks

The ruins of Súľovský hrad date from the 15th century. The complex consists of an upper and a lower castle, connected by a tunnel carved into the rock. From Súľov-Hradná, you can reach Súľovský hrad on foot via the red-marked hiking route or the green-marked educational trail through Súľovské skaly. Admission to the castle is free.
