Kotešová: Architectural History, Valley Views and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Kotešová
Kotešová can be explored through three specific themes: architectural history, views across the Váh Valley and cycling. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and Kotešová Manor House represent different architectural periods; from the church’s elevated position, you can see distinctive landscape landmarks. The Vážska Cycling Route runs along a canal to Kotešová and towards Svederník. Which aspect shapes your stay depends on whether you are more interested in historic buildings, the landscape or a cycling route.
Architectural history of the church and manor house
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built on older foundations at the end of the 16th century. The tower was added in 1641 by J. Nicolini, the master builder of the Hrabovský family. This means that the building brings together older foundations, construction dating to the end of the 16th century and a 17th-century tower. Its architectural history therefore extends beyond the date of its construction; the sequence of building elements offers a concrete way to explore the history of the town.
Kotešová Manor House adds another chronology to this architectural picture: it was built at the end of the 15th century and remodelled at the end of the 16th century. It is a uniquely preserved Late Gothic building. The Late Gothic classification describes its architectural character, while its construction and remodelling refer to two separate building phases. In chronological terms, the manor house is older; the church’s architectural history, by contrast, extends beyond its construction to include the tower added in 1641.
Views across the Váh Valley
Situated on an elevated position, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary offers views across the Váh Valley towards the table mountain with Hričov Castle and the Súľov rocks. How clearly the landscape can be seen depends on visibility. The view shifts the focus from individual building phases to the landscape, adding a sense of geographical orientation to the cultural context.
Cycling on the Vážska Cycling Route
For cyclists, the change in road type is a useful point of reference: the Vážska Cycling Route follows a local road along the canal to Kotešová, then continues from there on a newly built cycle path towards Svederník. This makes it easy to distinguish the road section along the canal from the cycle path that follows. Kotešová marks the transition between the two sections.
Music, events and local occasions
Three dated events add different local occasions to the architectural history. On 20 May 2023, a traditional children’s fishing competition was held at Lake Kadurka in the lower part of Kotešová. At the meeting of heligonka accordion players on 8 June 2025, 112 players performed in Kotešová; it was the twelfth edition. The eighth edition of the Kotešovský plenér was held on 22 August 2026 at the manor house in Kotešová. The events differ in both occasion and setting: a competition by the lake, a music gathering and an outdoor art workshop at the manor house.
