Súlov combines an impressive rocky landscape with medieval history and clearly defined opportunities for hiking and cycling. The Súľovské skaly, with their rock towers, rock pinnacles and rock gates, are the main attraction. They are complemented by the Súľovský hrad castle ruins, historical evidence in the village and trails whose length, elevation gain and walking time allow for specific travel planning.

The Súľovské skaly as the defining landscape

The Súľovské skaly National Nature Reserve covers 543.23 ha of protected area and 281.77 ha of buffer zone. It was established in 1973. The characteristic shape of the landscape was created by the weathering of the Súľov conglomerates, which formed rock towers, rock pinnacles and rock gates. The geological dimension is also evident in the layers of Súľov conglomerate near Súľov, which are more than 500 m thick.

Anyone looking for a landscape with clearly visible rock formations during a trip to Slovakia will find a particular focus here. The nature trail through the Súľovské skaly leads through the most touristically interesting central part of the protected area. A prominent stop is the 13 m-high Gotická brána, whose shape resembles a Gothic portal.

Nature trail and cycling route for planning your day

The nature trail through the Súľovské skaly is 4.2 km long. It includes 300 m of ascent and 300 m of descent; the estimated walking time is 1 hour and 40 minutes without breaks. This information helps you fit the excursion appropriately into your stay and align your daily plans with the distance and elevation gain.

Another option is the yellow-marked Súľov–Vrchteplá cycling route. It is 4.5 km long, has an elevation difference of 200 m and is classified as a leisure tour. This allows hiking and cycling to be included as different focuses in your travel plans without mixing the activities.

Castle ruins, early history and local culture

Súľovský hrad is a medieval castle ruin at an altitude of 660 m. The first written record dates from 1470. From the village of Súľov-Hradná, the castle ruins can be reached on foot via red-marked hiking trails or via the green-marked nature trail through the Súľov rocks. For visitors who want to combine nature and history, it is therefore one of the village's most obvious points of interest.

In the centre of Súľov is the Súľov-Hradná Memorial Room. It displays a historical living room, local costumes, work items, tools, old photographs and early evidence of technological progress. The Church of St Michael the Archangel also reflects the village's history: it dates from 1616 and was rebuilt in the 18th century.

Hrádok lies in front of the entrance to the Súľov Gorge, on a steep hill above the old Minarovský Mill. The settlement dates from the 9th to the 11th century. Hrádok was declared a national cultural monument in 1967 and a natural monument in 2001. Finds from the Copper Age period of the Eneolithic, dating to the period from 2900 to 1900 BC, were discovered in the Šarkania diera cave.

Which accommodation suits your plans

When looking for accommodation in Súlov, you can first define the focus of your trip: the nature trail provides fixed parameters for planning a hike, the cycling route offers a different emphasis, while the castle ruins, memorial room, church and Hrádok reveal the cultural and historical side of the village. This allows you to choose your hotel or other accommodation according to your preferred travel profile, without combining the natural and cultural attractions into a single experience.
