Višňové between the Rosinka Valley and Malá Fatra

Višňové lies in the Žilina Basin at the foothills of the Lúčanská Malá Fatra. The village stretches for almost 4 km along the Rosinka stream through a valley. The higher parts of Višňové offer unobstructed views of the Žilina Basin.

Landscape between the basin and Malá Fatra

The Višňovská Valley is known for its karst features. There is also a spring in this valley. The 1,364 m-high Minčol dominates the entire area around Višňové and forms a distinctive landmark in the landscape. The surroundings can therefore be viewed both through the valley and through the mountains of Malá Fatra.

One of the notable mountains is the 934 m-high Hoblík. It lies in Malá Fatra between Višňové and Stráňavy. The ascent can be made via a short ferrata with two difficulty levels; this section can also be bypassed. The best-known route to Minčol starts in Višňové and follows a blue-marked trail.

Hiking, climbing and cycling

The Višňovská Valley also offers climbing walls. Around 20 sport climbing routes were established in Višňové several years ago. Those who prefer to explore the mountain landscape on two wheels can take the first section of the Rajecká cycle route: it runs from Rosina via Višňové on an asphalt road to Turie. For winter activities, Višňové has cross-country skiing trails that are not groomed. The documented activities therefore range from a marked mountain trail and a ferrata that can be bypassed to climbing routes, cycling and cross-country skiing.

Chapels, manor house and pilgrimage

The village’s cultural history is also visible in specific places. The Farská rezidencia is a late Baroque manor house from the second half of the 18th century. The Kaplnka Vysoké-Čákor stands in a mountain landscape at the foothills of Malá Fatra, near a water spring. It was consecrated by parish priest Milan Gábriš on 25 November 1995.

The Žulový kríž was consecrated on 27 June 1937. It stands on a rise along the field road to the neighbouring municipality of Stráňavy, between stately lime trees. The oldest record of the venerated statue in Višňové dates from 1674. Every year, believers gather for pilgrimage celebrations on the Saturday and Sunday before the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Regular Fatima celebrations take place on the 13th day of every month.

Local traditions and practical orientation

The documented customs include traditional carnival dishes served during the Fašiangy festival. Children from the kindergarten and musicians took part in the traditional Stavanie mája; visitors also participated, and spring was welcomed together. Other spring traditions documented in Višňové include decorating Easter eggs, woodcraft, Korbáč basket weaving, creative workshops and a folklore performance.

For travel by public transport, the Višňové, konečná bus stop can be reached by bus routes from Žilina. At the end of Višňové, there is a car park in front of the barrier at the entrance to the Višňovská Valley. These two landmarks are among the clearly named arrival and starting points in the village.
