Strečno: Castles on the Váh and Trails in the Lesser Fatra

Strečno brings medieval castles, the Váh and the landscape of the Lesser Fatra together in a compact area. The preserved medieval ruins of Strečno Castle above the historic road between Žilina and Vrútky are particularly prominent. Access is provided as part of a guided tour led by an instructor. The castle also houses an exhibition on the prehistory and history of the castle and on the development of the surrounding region.

Castles and History on the Váh

Below Strečno Castle, the freely accessible Paseka recreation area was established in 2013. It includes five small, fully equipped wooden houses with thatched roofs, a functioning belfry and a well. Paseka complements a visit to the castle with a separate place featuring historical design elements, without replacing the guided tour of the castle.

The Plte Strečno rafting trip offers a different perspective on the castle landscape. From the Váh, you can see Strečno Castle and the nearby ruins of Starý hrad at the same time. The trip begins at the Bariérová landing stage and ends at the ferry in Strečno. It is led by an experienced raftsman, who tells passengers interesting facts about the history and traditions of rafting along the way.

Starý hrad rises in the Domašínsky meander of the Váh above Strečno Castle. The ruins were first mentioned in documents in 1241 as royal property. Local history also includes the masonry Church of St. Žofia, built in 1847. During the Christmas holidays, an animated nativity scene is made accessible there every year.

Landscape, Views and Marked Trails

The Domašínsky meander natural monument protects the most distinctive section of the Váh gorge through the Lesser Fatra. The wooden observation tower on Špicák above Strečno offers a comprehensive view of this landscape. From there, you can see the Žilina Basin, the ridge of the Lesser Fatra, parts of the Kysucká Highlands and the Strážov Mountains. The view also extends to four castles: Strečno, Starý hrad, Budatínsky hrad and Lietavský hrad.

There are two described routes for ascending to the observation tower. A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from the car park below Strečno Castle to Špicák. Another option is the green-and-white-marked educational trail, which begins in the centre of Strečno. This allows you to connect the viewpoint either with the area below the castle or directly with the town centre, without requiring an undescribed route.

Hiking, Mountain Biking and Events

Strečnianska mašľa is both an ultramarathon and a tourist hike around Strečno. The route follows marked hiking trails and is offered over distances of 50 km and 25 km. The routes lead from Strečno into the Lesser Fatra; part of the event takes place on marked trails through the national park.

A specific mountain-biking connection is also documented: the green-marked, relatively demanding Martin (ATC)–Strečno mountain-bike route ends in Strečno below Strečno Castle. You will find a historic memorial site on Zvonica Hill. The monument to the French partisans stands there; a crypt beneath it contains the remains of 24 partisans. Memorial ceremonies commemorating the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising take place at the monument every year.
