Lietavská Svinná-Babkov: Lietava Castle and Rock Landscape
Lietavská Svinná-Babkov combines a striking castle setting with marked trails, protected rock landscapes, and local cultural heritage. The nearby Lietava Castle rises above the town entrance. At the same time, hiking and cycling routes lead through the local districts and into the landscape of the Súľovské vrchy. The area is therefore less a single sightseeing destination than a region where natural and cultural highlights can be explored along different routes.
Hiking between Skalky, Lietava Castle, and Cibuľník
A green-marked hiking trail leads from Rajecké Teplice via Skalky and Lietavská Svinná to Lietava Castle and onward toward Žilina. The route thus connects several named natural and cultural points, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single destination. For a shorter, clearly described hike, another green-marked trail leads from Lietavská Svinná to the summit of Cibuľník in about 45 minutes, with an elevation gain of 213 metres. From there, beautiful views open up.
The local tourist association maintains marked hiking trails. In the Krieš and Cibuľník areas, it has also installed benches and tables for resting. One of the association’s traditional annual events is the opening of the hiking season in the Žilina district, called “100 jarných kilometrov”, at Lietava Castle. During Lent, a Way of the Cross takes place daily from the cemetery in Svinná to Krieš. Alongside the landscape, these facilities and routes give the area a local and spiritual character.
Rock Formations and a Regional Cycling Route
The municipality’s cadastral area includes the Súľovské skaly and Skalky sub-units of the Súľovské vrchy. They are part of the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The Súľovské skaly feature named rock towers, needles, walls, windows, and arches; approximately 50 rock formations have been named there in total. The rocky landscape is popular with climbers and complements the marked hiking trails with another distinctive natural attraction.
The regional cycling route 5405 Lietavská Lúčka–Porúbka passes through Babkov to Lietavská Svinná.
Local History and Sacred Heritage
Dom spomienok is a permanent exhibition of historical objects from Lietavská Svinná-Babkov. The collection includes furniture, work tools, clothing, documents, and photographs, most of which come from the municipality. Dom spomienok opens to visitors upon request. Anyone wishing to get to know the area not only through its trails and landscape but also through its everyday history will find a collection here closely connected to the municipality.
Another distinctive feature is the bell in the bell tower of Svinná. It originally stood at Lietava Castle and was later given to the settlement of Svinná. The masonry bell tower in Lietavská Svinná-Babkov also contains a Renaissance bell from 1606, probably originating from the chapel of Lietava Castle. This bell is still functional and is traditionally rung by hand. The Church of the Seven Sorrows of Mary in Lietavská Svinná dates from 1993.
