Fačkov amid mountain landscapes, hiking routes and ski arena

Fačkov lies at the transition between the Strážov Mountains and the southern part of the Lesser Fatra, in the Rajčianka Valley. The village therefore combines a distinctly mountainous landscape with several different opportunities: a hiking route over Kľak, winter sports at Fačkovské sedlo, a cycling route through the local countryside, as well as insights into regional history, architecture, cuisine and folklore.

Natural Area around Kľak

Kľak is designated as a National Nature Reserve and is subject to the fifth level of protection. In addition, the Kľak Site of European Importance, with the code SKUEV0240, covers an area of 85.71 hectares. It includes the cadastral areas of Fačkov and Vrícko. Kľak provides a habitat for large predators such as bears, wolves and lynxes. These protection and area designations make the natural area a distinct focus of a stay, without reducing it to a single leisure activity.

Hiking, Cycling and Winter Sports

One specific hiking option leads over Kľak from the car park at Fačkovské sedlo to Fačkov. The route is 12 km long, has an elevation gain of 549 metres and takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes. Its course alternates between meadows and forest; it follows a well-trodden path. This makes it possible to view the landscape not only as a setting for scenic views, but also as a clearly described tour with a distance, elevation gain and approximate duration.

At Fačkovské sedlo is the Fačkovské sedlo Ski Arena, with four ski lifts and seven ski runs whose total length is 5.8 km. There is a children's lift with a simple ski run for children. The ski and snowboard school teaches children and adults, from complete beginners to advanced learners. The ski arena also offers night skiing under artificial lighting. Those who want to experience Fačkov actively outside winter can find a 15 km cycling route through the local countryside at the Fačkovské sedlo Ski Arena. Along the route there are various rest areas and information boards about the local animal and plant life.

History, Church and Regional Culture

Fačkov is first mentioned in written records in 1351 as a settlement. A prominent testimony to the village's history is the Church of Saint Nicholas. It dates from the 17th century and was given a Baroque makeover from 1788 to 1792. The building has a single nave, a projecting block tower and Baroque windows with wrought-iron grilles.

The traditional clothing and music also give the village its own cultural profile. The women's folk costume of Fačkov included a white, gathered skirt, an apron made of blue-print fabric and embroidered white sleeve pieces. Every year at Christmas, a folklore group accompanies the Holy Mass in Fačkov with accordion and singing. It sings Slovak folk songs as well as traditional songs from the municipality of Fačkov, collected and made available by older generations.

Regional Cuisine and Connection to Fačkovské sedlo

At Salaš Kľak at Fačkovské sedlo, traditional Slovak cuisine made from regional ingredients is served. This includes bryndzové halušky, gazdovské halušky, strapačky and pirohy. There is also a bus stop at Fačkovské sedlo, served by a bus route on the Žilina–Prievidza line.
