Stráža: Cycling, Nature and Culture in Slovakia

Stráža combines mountainous terrain with the Varínka river floodplain and lies on the eastern edge of the Žilina Basin. Those who want to experience Slovakia by bicycle, on foot and with an interest in regional history will find several different ways to plan their trip here. The area belongs to the Malá Fatra Protected Landscape Area and lies within its third level of protection.

Cycling along the Varínka

Several described routes for cycling travellers pass through or lead to Stráža. The green-marked, 23.6-kilometre Gbeľany–Lysica–Varín route begins with a short climb up Strážovský Hill, then descends to Stráža, crosses the village and continues to Dolná Tižina. The route therefore offers a specific way to include Stráža in a longer cycling tour.

Another option is the Žilina Dam – Terchová Cycle Highway. It runs along the Varínka via Varín to Terchová and crosses a system of 17 wooden bridges. The route is easy and safe and suitable for families with children. In Stráža, there is also an opportunity to have ice cream. The green-marked route 5472 Horný Vadičov–Lysica–Stráža–Krasňany also leads to Stráža.

The Varínka flows through Stráža. It is a trout water where fishing is possible. In the Varínka protected area, the confluence of the mountain stream Branica with the Varínka forms a terrestrial corridor connecting the Krivánska Fatra with the Kysucká vrchovina. The forests of the Malá Fatra region also shape the natural environment: deciduous, coniferous and mixed forests support a high diversity of bird species there.

These landscape differences make Stráža interesting for visitors who do not want to spend their days exclusively on a single route. They can choose between a cycling tour, time spent by the Varínka, fishing and hikes in the surrounding area, setting different priorities without losing sight of the character of the region.

History and Local Culture

The Božie muky Chapel stands on the hill above Stráža. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and is a Classicist building from the end of the 18th century. The first written mention of Stráža dates from 1439 and appears in a deed of donation issued by King Albert. Those interested in regional history therefore gain, alongside the landscape, a sense of the historical development of the village.

The Gorazdove dni are also part of the local identity. The municipality of Stráža organises these sports and cultural celebrations every year in July. A variant of the folk costume worn in Terchová was also worn in Stráža. These cultural references complement the active side of the village with customs and regional forms of expression.

Stráža can be reached by bus and car via a third-class road. The nearest railway station is Varín, 7 kilometres from Stráža.
