Rajecké Teplice – Thermal Water, Nature and Culture

Rajecké Teplice combines the tradition of a Slovak spa town with a forested landscape and a variety of excursion destinations. The town lies in the southern part of the Rajecká Basin, in the wooded valley of the Rajčianka River, surrounded by the Malá Fatra and Strážov Mountains. This gives you several options when planning your trip: thermal water and therapeutic treatments, nature experiences, cycling, as well as historic sites and transport history.

Thermal Water and Orientation in the Town

The thermal water of the Rajecké Teplice spa has a temperature of 34 to 38°C. It is drawn from underground springs at a depth of approximately 30 metres. Several therapeutic spa treatments are offered at the Aphrodite balneological centre. Those who wish to explore the spa town on foot can also include the Laura thermal bath: it is about a 5- to 10-minute walk from the town centre.

A historic city tour leads to the spa town’s most important historic sites and sights. The railway is also important for understanding the town’s development: the local Žilina–Rajec line was built in 1898 and 1899, while Rajecké Teplice railway station was established in 1899 in the immediate vicinity of the spa complex.

Pond, Educational Trails and Cycling Routes

Labutie jazierko is a small artificial pond created by damming or diverting the Kuneradský potok stream. Swans and ducks can be seen there almost constantly. From spring to autumn, boats can be rented on the pond; in winter, the area is used for ice skating. Depending on the season, the site therefore offers different ways to enjoy it, while retaining the pond’s small, artificially created character.

For hiking, the Slnečné skaly educational trail runs from Rajecké Teplice to Porúbka through the Rajecká Valley. Along the way, it passes the Poluvsianska skalná ihla rock formation and continues to the Slnečné skaly nature reserve. Another educational trail starts at a car park in Rajecké Teplice, directly next to the Laura outdoor swimming pool, and is 5.6 km long.

Cyclists can also choose from several circular routes. The Rajecké Teplice pump track is suitable for children and adults, as well as for beginners and experienced riders. The mostly asphalted Rajeckou dolinou na dvoch kolesách (RDn2K) cycling circuit is intended for cyclists and families with children.

Museum, Churches and Architecture

The Múzeum dopravy is housed in Rajecké Teplice railway station and presents the development of transport from the earliest times to the present day. The railway section includes an H0 model railway, historic railway offices and a historic rail trolley used to maintain the line. The museum thus complements the history of the railway line with concrete models and pieces of equipment.

Among the more recent religious buildings is the Kostol Božského Srdca Ježišovho, built in 2000 and 2001. On 24 November 2001, it was consecrated by Ján Ch. Cardinal Korec, Bishop of Nitra. The Kostolík Nanebovzatia Panny Márie was built as early as 1909 in a Neo-Gothic style influenced by Alpine architecture. Its interior contains a wooden-carved Stations of the Cross created by the woodcarver Jozef Pekara from Rajecké Teplice. Another distinctive view of the town is provided by the Flámm brewery building, whose construction was completed in 1910.
