Kunerad

Kunerad combines a striking castle, places of remembrance and the landscapes of Malá Fatra. Particularly characteristic is the contrast between the impressive Kuneradský zámok, which is currently being restored, and the accessible outdoor areas offering views of the building. There is also a publicly accessible SNP Monument, a challenging cycling circuit above the village and the Pralesy Slovenska – Slatiny nature reserve.

Kuneradský zámok between architecture and restoration

Kuneradský zámok is a national cultural monument. It was built in 1914–1916 as a hunting lodge in the spirit of modern Art Nouveau, based on French architecture. Its form is designed as a block structure with a raised central section. Towers, arcades, terraces and exterior staircases give the building its varied appearance and make it understandable why the castle is one of Kunerad’s defining cultural features.

For specific visit planning, current access is crucial: Due to ongoing restoration work, Kuneradský zámok and its immediate surroundings are closed to the public. However, the surrounding park and meadows are accessible. From there, visitors can enjoy views of the castle and its restoration without entering the closed-off area. The castle can therefore primarily be experienced as an architectural landmark and a visible restoration site.

Culture of remembrance and sacred architecture

The monument to the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) stands in the park below Kuneradský zámok. It was built in 1965 and ceremonially unveiled in 1966. The monument commemorates the events of the Slovak National Uprising in the Rajecká Valley. Since 1981, it has been listed as a national cultural monument of Slovakia. Following restoration in 2019, the monument is accessible to the public.

Another architectural detail is provided by the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Kostol Povýšenia svätého Kríža. The modern building features an oval-shaped marble sanctuary. The church thus complements the historical and commemorative sites with its own distinctive modern architectural language.

Cycling circuit and the landscape of Malá Fatra

The Kunerad – Veľká okružná cycling circuit offers an active perspective on the surrounding area. It is described as a challenging tour for moderately fit and experienced cyclists and runs predominantly through the forests of Malá Fatra above Kunerad. Its rating and predominantly forested route give the circuit a distinctly different profile from a short excursion to the cultural monuments.

The Pralesy Slovenska – Slatiny nature reserve, located in Kunerad, is also part of the area’s natural environment. It broadens the focus from individual buildings to a protected landscape area. A small cultural detail can finally be found in the logo of the civic association OZ AKURAD: It features traditional local Kunerad cross-stitch embroidery.
