Bitarová – Landscape and Culture in the Žilina Basin

Bitarová is located in the western part of the Žilina Basin, in the valley of the Bitarovský potok. The village combines an almost forest-free hilly landscape with historical traces, sacred sites and a signposted route connecting Bitarová with several places in the surrounding area. Hilly Landscape and Seasonal Bird Migration

The landscape of Bitarová is almost forest-free and hilly. Typical features include marshy depressions and low ridges; smaller forested areas lie in the southwest and northeast of the municipality. As a result, the open forms of the terrain are particularly prominent, while the wooded areas on the edges of the municipality create distinctive spatial accents. In spring and autumn, a bird migration route passes through Bitarová. This seasonal feature adds a clearly time-limited natural aspect to the landscape.

History from the Bronze Age to Rural Economy

Bitarová was first mentioned as a municipality in 1393 and historically formed part of the Lietava estate. An even older settlement existed in the municipality during the Late Bronze Age and has been attributed to the Lusatian and Púchov cultures. The municipality also contains a Slovak burial ground with burial mounds from the period of the Great Moravian Empire.

Other traces relate to the use of the landscape. In the 17th century, Bitarová had carp ponds that were also used for fishing. Traditional rural activities also included beekeeping and sheep farming.

Church, Calvary and Traditional Customs

The Church of Saint Augustine in Bitarová dates back to 1992. A notable sacred site is the Calvary: it consists of small Stations of the Cross chapels arranged in two rows and connected by a Way of the Cross. A path through the Calvary site leads to a cross, a double cross and a memorial stone commemorating the local faithful buried there. The site stands on the grounds of an old cemetery.

The annual cycle of the municipality is also connected with this place. During the church fair celebrations for the Feast of Saint Augustine, Holy Mass is celebrated at the Calvary site every year. In addition, the municipality of Bitarová decided to revive the old custom of burning the Jánska vatra bonfire. Both references form part of the village’s traditional cultural character, without implying a current events schedule.

The “Za krásami Súľova” Tour

If you classify a tour by distance and difficulty, the 27-kilometre, moderately difficult “Za krásami Súľova” tour is a clearly described point of reference. It runs from Žilina via Bitarová, Peklina, Rôsoviny pod Roháčom, Hričovské Podhradie, Ovčiarsko and Hradisko, then back to Žilina. The starting point in Bitarová is also documented to help with orientation along this route: at the beginning of the village, the trail turns off the main road behind the village sign. At the intersection by the municipal office, shortly before the chapel, it turns left again.
