Rožňava: Caves, Mining Culture and Historic Gardens

Rožňava represents an unusually dense combination of cave experiences, mining culture, historic sites and marked cycling routes. If you want to choose your trip around Slovakia based on specific experiences, you will find different ways to visit here: short guided cave tours, an entrance involving a noticeable ascent, a cave that is currently closed, as well as museums and parks with a clearly recognizable historical profile.

Caves with different visiting options

The Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa is a unique natural phenomenon, known for the diversity and richness of its aragonite formations. The guided tour covers 300 metres and lasts approximately 30 minutes. For getting there, it is noted that a car park is located 300 metres from the cave. From there, a path with a slight incline leads to the entrance area. This makes the cave visit distinctly different from access routes where the path itself is more demanding.

The Gombasecká jaskyňa is located in Slovenský kras National Park. Its tour covers 530 metres and lasts approximately 30 minutes. It is particularly characterized by thin, hollow sinter tubes, which are formed and preserved there on a scale not reached in any other Slovak cave. Together with Hungary's Baradla Cave, Domica forms a cross-border cave complex extending across Slovakia and Hungary. A tour of Domica may include a boat ride on the underground Styx River.

Domica is also an important archaeological site. People lived there in the Neolithic period 5,000 to 6,000 years ago. Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa offers a different access profile: the route follows an approximately 1-kilometre-long educational trail with an ascent of 130 metres and takes about 25 minutes uphill. At Krásnohorská jaskyňa, approximately 450 metres are open to the public; however, the cave is currently closed. This status should be taken into account when choosing a cave destination.

Mining, Betliar and historic garden art

Rožňava is home to the Mining Museum, one of three specialized mining museums in Slovakia. The exhibition includes mining workplaces that illustrate working conditions underground and the working methods of miners. This makes it possible to explore the industrial and historical side of the destination through concrete working environments.

Betliar Manor preserves more than 14,000 volumes from the 15th to the 19th century in six languages in its library. The manor also houses the exhibition Aristocratic Domestic Culture in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The complex includes a 57-hectare English park that has been included in the list of historic gardens of the world. A cultural trip therefore offers a clear choice between the library collection, aristocratic domestic culture and an extensive historic garden complex.

Cycling and route choices

The Cyklomagistrála Slovenský kras is a marked closed circular route through Rožňava, Betliar and Krásnohorské Podhradie. Those who want to explore the destination by bicycle will find an established circular route structure rather than merely a collection of individual places. Another route from Dedinky to Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa begins and ends at access points designated in the Rožňava District.
