Vlachovo

Vlachovo combines evidence of iron processing with church and aristocratic culture, marked hiking trails and bodies of water along the Slaná River. The village is therefore suitable for a trip to Slovakia that brings historic buildings, activity in the landscape and regional traditions together. Particularly characteristic is the combination of industrial history and nature: a blast furnace of European importance is followed by hikes towards Stromíš, fishing waters at ponds and a thematic route through several places in the region.

Industrial History and Historic Buildings

Huta Karol is a blast furnace for producing iron from iron ore and a technical monument of European importance dating from 1870. It was founded by Emanuel Andráši and named after his father, Karol Andráši. The blast furnace is one of the outdoor exhibitions of the Slovenské technické múzeum Košice and places Vlachovo within Slovakia's industrial history.

The village's sacred architecture includes the Protestant church. Its origins lie in a single-nave Late Gothic building dating from around the end of the 15th century. The church was extensively rebuilt in 1871, and the altar dates from 1880. Another historic ensemble is Kaštieľ Andrášiovcov: the single-storey Baroque building was constructed in the second half of the 18th century and remodelled in the Classicist style in the first half of the 19th century. Following restoration in 2004 and 2005, it has served as the cultural centre of Vlachovo.

Smaller architectural monuments also contribute to this picture. The ceremonial entrance to Grófska ľadovňa was inspired by the Egyptian architecture of mastabas and pyramids. The Andrášiovci built the structure at the beginning of the 19th century. Behind it lies a room carved into the rock that was probably used to store hunted game. The various buildings illustrate how closely industrial, representative and religious history are connected in Vlachovo.

Hiking between Stromíš and Malý Radzim

A yellow-marked hiking trail passes through Vlachovo. The municipality also recommends a yellow-marked route from Vlachovo towards Stromíš and Babiná. For longer mountain hikes, the route from Vlachovo to Malý Radzim and back is documented; it is 18.8 km long and has an elevation gain of 1,201 metres. This provides a choice of a marked connection through the village, a direction recommended by the municipality and a clearly designated longer tour with a significant difference in elevation.

Vlachovo also has a traditional event called Výstup na Stromíš. It commemorates the Vlachovo-born residents Štefan Klement and Ján Elexa, who fell in the battles of the Second World War. Hiking therefore appears here not only as a sporting activity, but also as part of local remembrance.

Ponds, River and Nature Conservation

The Andrášiovské rybníky comprise ponds prepared for sport fishing. The Slaná flows directly beside the ponds, with trout and grayling waters available for fishing. A new spawning pond for the protected common frog was created at Močiar pod Michlovom in 2003. Public excursions to this area were planned for March and April as a nature-science educational measure במסגרת nature conservation.

Route, Festivals and Regional Traditions

Vlachovo lies on the thematic Iron Road II route. It runs from Drnava via Krásnohorské Podhradie, Rožňava, Betliar, Nižná Slaná and Vlachovo to Dobšiná. Vlachovo is therefore one of the route's stops.

The living culture includes the ľudového spevu a tanca festival and the Remeselnícky jarmok. In 2025, they reached their 31st and 19th editions, respectively. The programme of the festival and the Vlachovský remeselnícky jarmok also included a climb up the church tower with a photo exhibition. The Folklórny súbor Stromíš preserves songs and traditions from Vlachovo and the region. In this way, festivals, crafts, music and historic buildings add a distinctly regional dimension to the hiking and nature experiences.
