Betliar between the manor house, park and hiking trails

Betliar combines an exceptional manor house with an extensive historic park, regional religious heritage and trails leading into the countryside. At its heart is Betliar Manor House, whose origins date back to a fortified Gothic residence. It originally served as an outpost fortification of Krásna Hôrka Castle. The cultural profile is complemented by the Betliar Game Reserve, an educational trail through the municipality and several marked hiking routes.

Manor house, museum and English park

After the Second World War, the original furnishings of Betliar Manor House were preserved. A museum was subsequently established there, with an exhibition on the domestic culture of the aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection also includes a central library with more than 14,000 volumes from the 15th to the 19th century, preserved in six languages.

Several exhibitions make the manor house a place with a variety of thematic focuses. The Egyptology exhibition includes the mummy of a priest, the mummy of a child, and grave finds such as amulets and fragments from periods spanning the 7th century BC to the 1st century AD. The renewed presentation is divided into three thematic sections: the Andrássy family as collectors and travellers, Ancient Egypt, and the rediscovery of Egyptian art in the so-called “Egypt revival.” The winter garden also contains specimens from Africa and Asia, arranged as an exhibition of exotic trophies.

Surrounding the manor house is a 57-hectare English park listed in the Register of Historic Gardens of the World. Its artificial water system channels water from the Betliar stream into three lakes, three fountains and the so-called Great Waterfall. The park also contains a Masonic pavilion, a Chinese pavilion, a Japanese bridge, the Hermes Fountain and a lily pond.

Churches, local history and game reserve

The historic village setting includes two churches with different dates of origin and architectural styles. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Elizabeth the Widow dates from the first half of the 14th century and features remarkable vaults and interesting interior furnishings. The Protestant church was built in 1786; its features include Late Baroque vaults and a column altar dating from 1838.

A special cultural event is Hubertova jazda, held in Betliar almost every year and dedicated to the patron saint of hunters and horsemen. Nature and local history can also be explored along the “Sights of the Municipality of Betliar” educational trail. It includes 18 stops and is an easy route. The stops include houses of notable personalities, a park in the village centre, a war memorial in the local cemetery, the Protestant rectory and the fire brigade equipment station.

Established in 1967 in the cadastral area of the municipality, the Betliar Game Reserve now covers 1,696 hectares. It is used mainly in the cadastral area of Betliar for breeding fallow deer, mouflon and red deer. Visitors can observe freely grazing herds in the forest meadows.

Hiking trails and getting oriented locally

For longer routes, the yellow-marked hiking trail No. 8749 passes through Betliar. It begins at the former Betliar railway station, runs over the Volovec saddle and connects to hiking trail No. 2827. The yellow-marked route from Betliar to Skalisko is approximately 8 kilometres long and takes about 3.5 hours on foot. In good weather, the climb to Skalisko offers views of the High Tatras panorama and other well-known peaks of the Slovak Ore Mountains.

Betliar lies on Road I/67, which runs through the cadastral area between Rožňava and Dobšiná. It forms part of an important tourist transit route connecting Poland, Poprad, Vernár, Dobšiná, Rožňava, Kráľ and Hungary. Bus services run along I/67; stops are located in the southern part of the village centre and at the junction with the road to Nižná Maša. From the bus stop in Betliar, the manor house grounds can be reached on foot in 15 to 20 minutes by heading northeast along the Krivý Potok.
