Krásnohorské Podhradie Between the Mausoleum and Castle History

Krásnohorské Podhradie is a place with clearly visible traces of the Andrássy family and a cultural history closely connected with it. If you are looking for accommodation here, you will encounter this history in the visible landmarks of the town. The Andrássy Mausoleum is a publicly accessible museum and part of the exhibition of the Slovak National Museum – Múzeum Betliar. There, you can view the lavishly decorated interior and learn more about the lives of Dionýz and Františka Andrássy. At the same time, an important point to bear in mind when planning your visit is that Krásna Hôrka Castle is currently closed to the public due to ongoing reconstruction.

The Andrássy Mausoleum and Its Design

The mausoleum is a small sepulchral complex, meaning architecture designed as a burial site, dating from 1903–1904. Its design combines Art Nouveau and Neoclassicism. White Carrara marble imported from Italy was used. The building is therefore not only a museum but also an independent example of the representative architecture of its period.

The Andrássy Mausoleum is located in Krásnohorské Podhradie directly on the E58/E571 main road between Rožňava and Košice. Opposite it are a ticket booth and a small temporary parking area.

Further Evidence of the Andrássy Family

The Andrássyovská obrazáreň is also part of the local cultural history. The building was constructed in the Art Nouveau style in 1908 and has a floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross. Since 1990, it has once again served its original purpose as an art gallery. Together with the mausoleum, it showcases two different architectural and cultural facets of the Andrássy heritage: here, a sepulchral complex made of white marble; there, a building specifically designed as a gallery.

Krásna Hôrka Castle was originally built as a medieval fortification. Its museum history began after 1857, when Count Juraj Andrássy established a family museum using preserved furniture, weapons, and armour. The collections were opened to visitors in 1867. When planning your stay, this distinction between documented museum history and the current impossibility of public access is crucial.

Hiking, Cycling, and Local History

Activities and local traditions are also part of the picture of Krásnohorské Podhradie. The traditional St. Valentine’s ascent under Čipkov vrch took place for the eleventh time on 17 February 2024. During the eleventh ascent, the start and finish were once again at the cultural centre. This information refers to the event on 17 February 2024 and not to a future date.

For cyclists, the 54.5-kilometre cycling tour around Zádiel is relevant. It passes through Krásnohorské Podhradie between Drnava and Rožňava. In addition, local history refers to a church in the municipality that was already mentioned for the years 1332–1337. Thus, in Krásnohorské Podhradie, architectural evidence from the Andrássy era, medieval history, a documented cycling route, and a traditional ascent exist side by side.
