Rožňava – Historic Centre and Mining History in Gemer

Rožňava combines a distinctive historic townscape with the mining history of Gemer. At its centre is a spacious square, complemented by several adjoining streets. Historic Centre with a Large Square

The historic centre of Rožňava consists of the square and the adjoining streets. The square is considered the largest of its kind in Slovakia and gives the townscape an unusually spacious structure. The present layout of the historic centre emerged approximately towards the end of the 15th century. Rožňava is also one of the centres of the Gothic Route in Gemer, placing the town within a broader cultural and historical context.

Watchtower and Cathedral

A particularly clear landmark is the Rožňava watchtower. The Renaissance tower was built between 1643 and 1654. From its gallery, visitors can see all the monuments of the historic centre, the Calvary, the town and the Rožňava Basin. Tourists can visit the watchtower during the opening hours of the tourist information centre, even without a guided tour. This means the tower can be planned as an independent part of a town visit without requiring a guided tour.

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a medieval Gothic sacred building dating from the late 13th century; its construction was completed in 1304. It is considered the oldest and most valuable cultural monument in Rožňava. The cathedral also contains a panel painting regarded as the oldest depiction of mining on an altarpiece in Central Europe. This combination of sacred art and the region’s mining history makes the building an important part of the town’s cultural profile.

Mining History in the Museum and on the Way to the Calvary

The Mining Museum in Rožňava is a regional history district museum specialising in the mining and metallurgical industries of Gemer. It has five separate permanent exhibition units. The topics range from the mining and metallurgical industries of Gemer, through the age of steam and mining workplaces, to the nature of the Slovak Karst and the surrounding areas. Mining machinery and a mine railway are located in the courtyard. The museum therefore presents not only historic working environments, but also the region’s technological and natural-history connections.

The Rožňava Calvary is one of the oldest calvary complexes in Slovakia and is also the oldest monument of its kind in the Gemer region. The walk from Rožňava Town Hall at Miners’ Square to the Calvary is considered easy, is less than two kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 120 metres. For orientation, this describes both the short distance and the specific difference in elevation. Together with the watchtower and the historic centre, it creates a visitor experience in which the town’s history, sacred monuments, mining and a path to an elevated destination follow closely one after another.
