The town lies in a deep valley at the transition between the Slovak Ore Mountains and Slovak Paradise National Park. One particularly distinctive landmark is the Dobšinská Ice Cave. It lies within the cadastral territory of the town of Dobšiná, inside the Stratená National Nature Reserve, and has been included on the World Heritage List since 2000. This precise classification is informative for orientation in the area: the cave belongs to the landscape surrounding Dobšiná, while the town itself lies between two different natural areas.

Hiking, cycling and the hill-climb course

Dobšiná and its surroundings offer hiking trails in Slovak Paradise National Park and the Slovak Ore Mountains. A recreational hiking route leads from Dobšiná towards the 1,112-metre-high Čuntava. The destination gives the route a clear mountain character, without requiring any specific walking time or level of difficulty to be inferred from it.

The town is also connected to a network of different cycling routes: marked and unmarked cycling routes lead through the nature of Slovak Paradise around Dobšiná and across the town. Those who want to plan their excursions more closely around existing transport and route points will also find a clear endpoint for route SR18. It ends in Dobšiná at a SAD bus stop with a car park.

The Dobšinský kopec hill-climb course offers a completely different landscape experience. It begins in Dobšiná on Hnilecká Street, is 6,810 metres long and has 30 bends. The different routes should be regarded as separate experiences: the recreational hiking route leads towards Čuntava, while Dobšinský kopec starts in the town itself.

Historic centre and living traditions

Several Neoclassical houses stand in the historic centre of Dobšiná. Churches and a special work of sacred art add to this townscape. One church in Dobšiná dates from 1480. A church in Dobšiná contains a fresco on the triumphal arch depicting Hildegard of Bingen. This fresco is considered a unique example of the depiction of the saint in Slovakia. Another church in Dobšiná was built in 1792 in the Baroque-Neoclassical style.

Local culture also includes traditions connected with the town's mining history. The Dobšiná Pentecost tradition is associated with the founding of the miners' guild (brotherhood). The Dobšiná Days and the Pentecost festival include a traditional Pentecost and craft market. In this way, the town complements its nature and route offerings with historical connections, church art and traditional festival culture.
