Brezno District: Caves, Forests and Horehronie

Brezno District combines impressive caves, protected forest landscapes and vibrant culture into a diverse destination in Horehronie. The contrasting nature of the experiences underground and in the forest is particularly evident: Bystrianska Cave offers a designated visitor route, while Dobročský Primeval Forest is accessible to the general public only with a guide booked in advance.

Caves and Protected Landscapes

Bystrianska Cave, developed for visitors by the SSJ, is a national nature monument in Brezno District. The visitor route is 580 metres long and takes 45 minutes. It includes three chasms approximately 20 metres deep. The surveyed underground labyrinth section of Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov presents a different scale: it is 19,885 metres long and 324 metres deep.

Special habitats are also central to the landscape above ground. Breznianska Skalka is a nature reserve in the cadastral area of Brezno and lies within the protected zone of the Low Tatras National Park. Its preserved sessile oak stand is considered a unique botanical, dendrological and plant-geographical feature of the region. Horné lazy protects a forest steppe and the associated plant and animal species. Dobročský Primeval Forest is designated as a national nature reserve with the highest, fifth level of protection. An organised tour is therefore an essential part of access to this forest.

Forest History and Historic Railway Lines

The Chodník lesného času educational trail runs through the grounds of the Lesnícky skanzen in the Vydrovska Valley. It presents the forest as an ecosystem, the history of human use of forests and the development of forestry in Slovakia. Another connection between landscape and technology is the Čiernohronská lesná železnica. The foundation stone of this narrow-gauge railway was laid in 1909; its equipment includes several steam and diesel locomotives as well as historic open-sided observation carriages.

The central station in Čierny Balog is the starting point for three routes: to Vydrovo, Dobroč and Šánske. Horehronské cyklodreziny also operate on one section of this railway. The lightweight rail vehicles are powered by pedalling and run on 760-millimetre-gauge tracks between Hronec and the Šánske passing loop and back. Historic railway infrastructure and an unusual form of cycling thus come together directly.

Culture, Crafts and Regional Cuisine

The Museum of Horehronie in Brezno is now housed in two buildings directly on the town square. It also includes the home of a blueprint craftsman, with a wooden textile mangle. Those wishing to experience regional traditions not only through exhibitions but also through food will find a particularly vivid offering at Salaš Zbojská: visitors can join the Bača and the Vlachs in caring for sheep and other animals and in making cheese and Oštiepky. Traditional Slovak cuisine is served there, with an emphasis on mutton and lamb.

Active Days in Brezno District

Organised rafting on the Hron is documented as an activity on the water. The package includes boats, paddles and equipment, transport for boats and people, as well as secure parking. The Tále educational trail complements the natural experiences with interactive elements and information panels about the nature of the Low Tatras.

Seasonal differences are also visible in Brezno District. The ski resort in Mýto pod Ďumbierom has groomed slopes for beginners and more experienced skiers, a chairlift and five drag lifts. In summer, the area becomes a bike park, with bicycle and e-bike rental, servicing and an MTB school. In Osrblie, the National Biathlon Centre offers optimal year-round training conditions for active athletes, amateurs and the wider sporting public. It was confirmed as the venue for the 2024 Open European Championships and organised World Biathlon Championships on roller skis.
