Discover Telgárt: Nature, Viaducts and Living Traditions

Telgárt combines a protected river landscape, striking railway structures, winter sports and vibrant traditions. The town lies between the Low Tatras, Slovak Paradise and Muránska planina national parks. As a result, a stay offers a wide variety of experiences side by side: a nine-kilometre educational trail, viewpoints overlooking viaducts, paths leading to a significant wooden cross, skiing and cross-country skiing opportunities, as well as insights into the culture of the Horehronie region.

Educational Trails between the Hron Source and the Nature Reserve

The Meandre Hrona Nature Reserve is managed by the Low Tatras National Park and is subject to the fourth level of protection. The Meandre Hrona educational trail is nine kilometres long and can be started in Telgárt near the Hotel Telgárt. Another route leads to the source of the Hron: it begins at the Telgárt penzión railway stop and continues a few metres farther to a seating area at the river’s source. The two starting points reveal different facets of the landscape without having to be combined into a single circular route.

The Voglov chodník leads to the wooden cross on Ždiar above Telgárt. It is home to the tallest wooden cross in Slovakia. The combination of the educational trail, the source and the high-altitude setting gives the town a clear connection to nature and hiking, while the protected area highlights the special status of the landscape.

Viaducts, Railways and Winter Activities

Among the most striking structures is the Telgártský Viaduct, which is 22 metres high and 86 metres long. The Chmarošský Viaduct consists of nine stone arches with a clear height of up to 18 metres and can be seen from the main road. Depo Café Telgárt houses a historic railway carriage; from there, visitors can see the Chmarošský Viaduct. The Telgártska slučka adds a spiral tunnel to the railway theme; its curve has a radius of 400 metres and the tunnel is 1,239 metres long.

There are also specific winter sports facilities. Ski Telgárt has nine downhill runs and seven lifts at an altitude of 905 to 1,309 metres. The runs have a combined length of 6.5 kilometres. The ski area also includes a one-kilometre cross-country skiing track. A newly built cycling route connects Telgárt with Šumiac and is offered together with e-bike access to Kráľova hoľa.

Church, Customs and Regional Culture

A monument on the village square commemorates the Slovak National Uprising. Telgárt’s Church of the Holy Trinity is a Baroque-Classical building dating from 1784 and is listed in the Central Register of the Slovak Monument Fund under number 84/1. It helps preserve local traditions such as pilgrimages and religious festivals, which also attract visitors from the surrounding regions.

The inhabitants of Telgárt continue to preserve old customs, traditions and a folk costume that is still worn today. The polyphonic singing of the Horehronie region was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2017 with the support of the municipalities of Vernár, Telgárt, Šumiac and Pohorelá. Local handicraft culture includes a fully operational blacksmith’s workshop. During hands-on workshops, visitors can try blacksmithing themselves.

Regional cuisine and festivals are also part of the townscape. Telgárt Resort serves traditional dishes from the Horehronie region, such as halušky and Telgárt podpecníky, as well as the local beer “Telgartská 12”. At Telgárt’s Čučoriedkový deň, the programme includes a baking competition for blueberry specialities, tastings of traditional and modern recipes, a presentation of dessert preparation, as well as blueberry cakes, strudels and preserves. Music, a children’s theatre performance and folklore round out the festival.
