Helpa: Hiking, Nature and Culture

Helpa combines nature experiences in the Low Tatras with a distinctive regional culture. The highest parts of the Heľpa area along the ridge of the Low Tatras lie within Nízke Tatry National Park. The southern part of the cadastral area also extends into the Veľká Stožka State Nature Reserve.

Hiking with several route options

A notable date for hikers is the annual Výstup na Veľký bok hiking event, held on the first Saturday in August and organised by hikers in cooperation with the municipality. Route A starts in Heľpa’s square and leads to the summit of Veľký bok. Those looking for a less demanding option can start at the Priehyba saddle; participants are taken there from Heľpa by bus. These two options therefore differ in both their starting point and the format of the event.

The Náučný chodník chotárom obce Heľpa educational trail offers an independent alternative. The circular route is 8.3 kilometres long, and you can allow up to 3.5 hours for the walk. The Chotárom obce Heľpa educational trail can be started in the village centre; parking is available at Jarmočisko. In April 2026, the educational trail had new information panels and offered views of the surrounding landscape. On 31 December, Heľpa also hosts the annual Silvestrovský výstup na Veľkú Vápenicu winter hike.

Cycling and getting there

For cycling, the Z Heľpy cez Pohorelú na Priehybu route is a specific option. The circular tour is 23.6 kilometres long and is rated as moderately difficult. It starts at a car park in Heľpa and leads to Priehyba, a connection point between Liptov and Horehronie. There is also an electric bicycle charging station in Heľpa’s village square. Heľpa can be reached by bus or train, so the village can also be included in travel plans without relying exclusively on private transport.

Festivals, crafts and the villagescape

The Horehronské dni spevu a tanca takes place annually on the last weekend in June. The festival presents traditional crafts, ethnographic exhibitions and traditional cuisine. In this way, the event complements the nature and activity offerings with an insight into regional customs and everyday culture.

Heľpa has been protected as a heritage conservation zone since 1992. The villagescape is characterised by originally arranged wooden log houses, mostly positioned with their gables facing the street; traditional shingle-roof details are also present. One individual listed building is the late Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built in 1800. Its furnishings include a wooden Louis XVI pulpit from the early 19th century.
