Dolná Lehota Between Valley, Protected Area and Waterfall

Dolná Lehota lies in the valley of the Vajskovský stream and provides access to a landscape where nature, mining history and regional culture are closely intertwined. The municipality is located in the protection zone of the Low Tatras National Park. The natural area includes the Skalka National Nature Reserve, which covers 2,659.81 hectares, was designated in 1997 and protects habitats ranging from the montane to the alpine zone. The reserve partly lies within the cadastral territories of Jasenie and Dolná Lehota.

Alpine plant communities occur in the summit areas of Skalka at an elevation of 1,980 metres. Tatra chamois, marmots, brown bears, lynxes and red deer live in the area. Vajskovský Waterfall is another prominent feature of the landscape: it plunges 9 metres over a rugged rock escarpment and lies at an elevation of about 1,200 metres.

Educational Trails, Valley Paths and Water Activities

An approximately 2 km-long hiking trail leads from Pálenica to Vajskovský Waterfall. The Vajskovská dolina educational trail and the green-marked hiking trail both end at the waterfall. In addition to hiking, the Vajskovská Valley is also suitable for cycling, offering different ways to explore the landscape.

The Vajskovská dolina educational trail presents the history of mining at its first information panel near Dve vody. It focuses in particular on antimony mining in the area; the station also commemorates the avalanche in the nearby Kulichova dolina. Another educational trail, Medveďou cestičkou, can be reached via turn-offs from the main roads connecting Dolná Lehota with Krpačovo and Krpačovo with Tále. Its subject matter includes historical and mining topics as well as Pro Silva, forestry and hunting-related aspects.

Part of the Krpačovo recreation centre lies within the municipality of Dolná Lehota. Swimming and boating are possible there. Krpačovo also has artificially snow-covered ski slopes with a stated total length of 7 km. In winter, Dolná Lehota also offers opportunities for extensive cross-country skiing excursions. The documented range of activities therefore extends from paths through the valley to water-based and winter sports experiences.

Mining and Memorial Sites

The history of the surrounding area is reflected not only in the educational trails. After local mining resumed in the 19th century, antimony ore was processed in Vajsková. A memorial in the Kulichova dolina commemorates the 1956 avalanche disaster in which sixteen forestry workers lost their lives. At Črmné, a SNP memorial dedicated to the victims of the Second World War stands along the road to Krpačovo.

Dolná Lehota itself also has a long settlement history: the settlement was founded in 1358 in the territory of the Ľupča estate by the hereditary reeve Petrík from Predajná. Local architectural and cultural history includes the Classicist Chapel of St John the Baptist from 1818 and the Church of St John the Baptist, built in 1914. Its interior features a 1915 fresco decoration by the prominent Spiš painter Jozef Hanula. From the 18th to the 20th century, Dolná Lehota was also one of the so-called lace-making villages.
