Polomka: Low Tatras, Nature and Regional Culture

Polomka combines the landscape of the Low Tatras with striking viewpoints, winter sports, nature trails and a distinctive regional culture. The northern side of the village is bordered by the Low Tatras massif. Within the municipality, Homôlka reaches 1,665 metres and gives the landscape a clear alpine character. At the same time, a second-class road and a railway line run through Polomka from west to east: the connection extends from Banská Bystrica and Brezno onwards to Poprad and Rožňava.

Mountain Landscape, Skiing and Views

The Polomka Bučnik ski resort has three technically snow-covered and regularly groomed runs: one easy and two intermediate. There is also a ski equipment rental service, a ski service and a ski school. Polomka therefore has a clear focus for a stay where winter sports and mountain scenery belong together. Another way to reach higher ground is via Polomské očko. The observation tower stands at 906 metres on the summit of Polomka's local ski resort. The access route follows a 2-kilometre-long ski run with an elevation difference of approximately 300 metres. From the tower, panoramic views extend across the ridge of the Low Tatras, the forests of Muránska planina and large parts of the Horehronie region. Those who wish to explore the surrounding area on foot will find the Voľchovô educational trail, an 8.5-kilometre-long nature trail. Seven stations and information panels focus on the fauna and flora of the region. The trail begins at the upper car park of the ski resort and leads directly to the Polomské očko observation tower. Benches for resting are located at each information panel. The Rybník Voľchovô pond is part of the educational trail and is connected to two marked cycle paths. It can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car. At the pond, the owner can demonstrate fishing and provide the equipment required for it.

Polomka Culture and Historic Sites

The traditional costume of Polomka is characterised by rich embroidery on hand-woven linen; its ethnographic elements have been preserved in their original form. At the MIDO exhibition hall, you can see folk art and everyday objects, including traditional costumes, photographs, paintings, porcelain, household appliances, looms, sewing machines and a historically furnished room. The exhibition also includes documents about the production of polomská kapka. The MIDO exhibition hall opened to the public in 2015. The exhibition “Od ľanu ku kroju” traces the traditional production of clothing: from growing flax through processing, spinning and weaving to the polomská kroje. You can try out the fully functioning looms. Admission is possible by prior reservation at 0911 179 191. The exhibition is located in the municipal log building, SNP 65, 976 66 Polomka. Among the significant historic sites is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint John the Baptist. Count František Wesselenyi had it built in 1666; after his death, his wife continued the construction, which was completed three years later. Inside is a unique late Baroque pulpit from the late 17th century, which is classified as a national cultural monument. The former poorhouse of Polomka is a notable historic monument and was founded in 1725 by Count Štefan II Koháry. Several completely original wooden houses have been preserved, especially on Bernolákova and Nálepkova streets. The grounds of the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary have served as a pilgrimage site since 1999. Every year on 15 September, believers from various parishes gather there. Visitors can drink spring water that does not freeze even in winter. Regional specialities also include traditional dishes such as hriatô s medom, krompak v kapuste and štikaná chamula. Locally, Polomka is particularly known for its pulled polomská štrúdľa.
