Šumiac: Mountain Trails and Living Culture
Šumiac combines a mountain landscape with an unusually vivid village culture. The village is a starting point for trails to Kráľova hoľa, while its churches, exhibitions, folklore and handicraft traditions preserve a distinctive cultural identity. This gives you a range of different experiences to consider when planning your trip: ski touring and cross-country skiing, cycling routes with clearly defined levels of difficulty, historic interiors and insights into the regional way of life.
Mountain trails, winter sports and cycling routes
A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Šumiac to Kráľova hoľa. The mountain is also a ski touring area approved by the NAPANT administration. Those who explore the mountain further can reach a trail from Vyšné sedlo through open, cave-like mountain terrain. From there, views extend across the surrounding landscape to the summit of Kráľova hoľa.
For cross-country skiing, there is a groomed 6.2-kilometre route from Šumiac to Predné sedlo below Kráľova hoľa. In winter, Chamkova stodola can also be visited via a groomed cross-country ski trail through snow-covered meadows. The building is a remnant of the traditional dual economic system of Šumiac’s ancestors. Separate from this is a completed section of a forest road connecting Šumiac with Predné sedlo and measuring more than 6.3 kilometres in length.
Cyclists can also choose between two clearly different circular routes. The easy “Cyklookruh Šumiac – Vaľkovňa – Zlatno” starts in Šumiac, is 20 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 210 metres. The difficult “Šumiacky okruh cez Besník” also starts in the village, covers 36 kilometres and has an elevation gain of 1,130 metres. “E-biky pod Kráľovou hoľou” offers sporting activities in Šumiac in summer and winter.
Exhibitions and sacred architecture
The Šumiacka izba next to the primary school on the village square is an exhibition of Šumiac’s traditional culture. Its first section presents a room and kitchen with a traditional “špohret”, furnished in the style of former homes in Šumiac. A reservation by phone is required for a visit.
Another independent attraction is the Múzeum zvoncov a spiežovcov at Bučinka 23. It is the private collection of Mikuláš Gigac. Bell-making was a home-based craft connected with sheep and cattle farming, and it developed particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Greek Catholic Church of the Ascension of the Lord is Baroque-Classical in style. It was built in 1775 on the site of an older wooden structure dating from 1643 and renovated in 1898–1901. Inside is a three-storey iconostasis dating from 1909. During the winter months, this church hosts the event “Vianoce pod Kráľovou hoľou”, also called “Kračun pod Kráľovou hoľou”. The FS Šumiačan folklore ensemble performs Christmas and church songs there in Old Church Slavonic and Slovak; choirs and ensembles from across Slovakia also take part each year.
Folklore, regional products and relaxation
The two folklore ensembles FS Šumiačan and Šumiačaník have existed in Šumiac for more than 50 years. Another established part of local cultural life is the celebration of the sovereignty of the Slovak Republic, which has been held in Šumiac since 1992 and ends with the lighting of a bonfire at Úboč.
At the traditional salaše, you can buy homemade products and watch sheep’s milk being processed. Local production includes bryndza, žinčica and sheep’s cheese. For a different kind of break, Lesná sauna Šumiac offers a traditional dry sauna and natural cooling in a nearby mountain stream. The sauna is intended for small groups or a romantic stay for two.
Other destinations to consider for your trip to Slovakia include Pohorelá, Ráztoka, Cierny Balog, Telgárt, Valaská, Bacúch, Bystrá and Zavadka Nad Hronom.
