In the 18th century, iron ore mines were opened and an ironworks was built in the cadastral territory of Pohorelá. The ironworks complex developed into the most important iron producer in Gemerská župa. Pohorelská Maša was established as a workers’ settlement in connection with the Pohorelá ironworks. A specific date illustrates the complex’s technological significance: in 1833, Karol Heyssl built the first rolling mill for sheet metal there in what was then Hungary. The settlement and the works therefore form part of a shared historical story in which raw-material extraction, industrial processing and the lives of the workers are interconnected.

Church and Living Culture

Pohorelská Maša is home to a Roman Catholic church built in 1903 on the site of an earlier wooden Coburg manor house. Its stained-glass windows provide a distinctive accent. In the year of its consecration, the church was dedicated to Saint Filip. East of Pohorelá stands the Chapel of Sedembolestná Panna Mária in a field beside a farm track between Pohorelá and Pohorelská Maša. The site is regarded as a place of peace and prayer and offers views across the Horehronské podolie and the lower mountain peaks of the Nízke Tatry.
