Michalová: Luštiareň, Industrial Heritage and Cycle Paths

Michalová between the Rohozná Valley and Local History

Michalová lies in a foothill area of the Brezno Basin in the valley of the Rohozná stream. The inhabited area extends between 585 and 1,195 metres above sea level. This gives you a place where landscape, industrial history, religious buildings and cycle paths meet within a compact thematic area. The local history is particularly vividly presented along the educational trail: it comprises six information panels and connects the area by the church, Luštiareň, the cultural centre and Hrable Street.

Educational Trail, Luštiareň and Industrial Heritage

Luštiareň is a national cultural monument and a technical heritage site. It was used to obtain seeds from cones for forest nurseries and reforestation. It thus represents a specific connection between local technology and the use of the forest. Iron processing forms a second historical focus: a blast furnace was built in Michalová in 1795. The mining and processing of iron ore continued until 1877; that year, the blast furnace was dismantled because of a lack of ore.

Church and Calvary

The religious buildings also preserve different historical layers. The parish church Kostol sv. Štefana Uhorského in Michalová was completed in 1897. Material from the former blast furnace was used in its construction. The main altar features a painting of Saint Stephen of Hungary, painted by Linhard Vilmos in Budapest in 1896. The Calvary includes a chapel whose construction began in 2013. In 2014, a Stations of the Cross was created there using large stones and bronze plaques for the stations.

Railway Line, Nature and Cycle Paths

The broader landscape perspective includes a railway line that runs through Michalová from Brezno via Hálny to Polhorská Polhora. Beyond there, it becomes a rack railway that runs to Tisovec through extensive coniferous forests. The Rohoznianska jelšina nature reserve is located nearby, on the road from Michalová to Brezno. The protected area is subject to the fifth level of protection and is important because of its scientific, educational and cultural-educational significance. It is also considered an example of rare mountain alder stands of priority habitat type 91E0 at an elevation of approximately 570 metres.

Two named connections are documented for cyclists. The 30-kilometre cycle route “Okolo Michalovej na Kabátovú” passes through Michalová and then follows the Rohoznianska jelšina nature reserve. The “Sedlo Burda – Krátke – Bujakovo” route runs via Michalová Brest and continues through the village square and Hrable in Michalová. This allows the local areas, forest landscape and the cultural points mentioned above to be viewed from different directions.

Community Life and Public Events

Dni obce Michalová is a recurring public community festival. The family-oriented programme includes food, music, markets and exhibitions. At one celebration, visitors also learned about the history of local handicraft products and watched local masters making wood carvings. The municipality announced the 14th edition for 15 and 16 August 2026. Recurring public events also include the Silvestrovský beh, whose 25th edition was announced for 2023, and the Jarný lesný beh; its 12th edition was announced for 30 May 2026.
