Ľubochňa – Valley, Trails and Historic Traces

If you would like to combine nature trails with industrial history and a well-preserved townscape on your trip to Slovakia, Ľubochňa offers several clearly distinct experiences. The Ľubochnianska Valley is the longest valley in the Veľká Fatra mountain range. A route through the valley leads into Veľká Fatra National Park, making the town a starting point for different forms of hiking and cycling.

Valley Landscapes and Marked Trails

The Ľubochňa–Dolina educational trail begins at the municipal office. The educational trail in Ľubochňa is designed as a self-guided loop for hiking and cycling and can be used in both summer and winter. Ten stations and an introductory information board accompany the route. This makes the trail suitable not only for the journey itself, but also for providing clear orientation along the way.

For cyclists, a green-marked route leads from Ľubochňa through the Ľubochnianska Valley. A yellow-marked hiking trail begins at Ľubochňa railway station and runs over Mount Havran towards Ostré. From the centre of Ľubochňa, a red-marked trail passes the Korbeľka Nature Reserve and leads to Mount Kopa, where views of the Váh Valley open up. Another green-marked hiking route connects Ľubochňa railway station with the Prameň Mária spring. The spring and its surroundings, including a pond, form a resting place.

Forest Railway, Technology and Townscape

The Ľubochňa forest railway was built in 1903–1904 as a narrow-gauge railway to transport timber from the Ľubochnianska Valley. It occasionally also carried tourists and spa guests. Its special historical significance lies in the fact that the forest railway was the first electrified railway in Central Europe. Thus, the history of transport is directly among the subjects you can discover in Ľubochňa alongside the landscape.

The hydroelectric power station was built in 1904 on the site of an iron mill. It can be visited by prior arrangement; information panels in its rooms provide details about the history of this technical monument. The historic townscape also includes Kollárov dom, a spa-style building with characteristic wooden balconies.

Park, Church and Seasonal Impressions

Kúpeľný park is a landscaped park with Art Nouveau elements. Curving paths lead to small architectural features, distinctive settings, a pavilion, resting areas and a fountain. The park also contains an original lime-tree avenue dating from the late 19th century. Those who would like to get to know Ľubochňa not only through marked trails but also through designed green spaces will find an independent historic highlight here.

The church in Ľubochňa brings together several stages in its construction and renovation history: The foundation stone was consecrated by Prelate Andrej Hlinka in 1937, and the church was blessed on 29 June 1938. In its present form, it was renovated during the tenure of the clergyman Ondrej Poľančík and consecrated by Mons. František Tondra on 3 July 1998. Rezbárske dni takes place regularly in August.

There is also a clearly defined option for a winter stay: The 850-metre-long Vyšné Krátke slope offers good conditions for family skiing when there is sufficient natural snow. This wording is important, because the offer is explicitly dependent on sufficient natural snow.
