Bešeňová – Thermal Water, Travertine and Paths Along the Lakeshore
Thermal water and travertine shape Bešeňová
Bešeňová combines an experience in the water with a landscape visibly shaped by mineral water. The Vodný park Bešeňová water park combines natural geothermal water with modern water attractions. The thermal water comes from a depth of more than 2,000 metres and is rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron. This gives the town a clear appeal for travellers who want to combine water-based experiences with unusual natural formations and cultural destinations.
The Bešeňovské travertíny
Several hundred metres north of Bešeňová lie the Bešeňovské travertíny. The area includes a disused quarry covering 3.18 hectares, as well as travertine cascades. Mineral water flows continuously over these cascades, giving the rock formations a natural sheen. The travertines are therefore not only a landscape feature but also a vivid example of how mineral-rich water shapes the character of a place.
At the edge of the quarry stands a well-known chapel. There, you can view the world-famous golden Bešeňovský travertine. The chapel adds a cultural dimension to the natural site without allowing the geological features of the travertine cascades to fade into the background.
A church, a chapel and a castle with restricted access
One of the notable buildings in Bešeňová is the Church of the Holy Trinity (“Kostol Najsvätejšej Trojice”). It was built in 2001 on the site of a smaller church dating from 1850. Its pyramid-shaped form is striking, giving it an unusual architectural character.
A different kind of visit applies to Kaštieľ Mitošiny. The castle is privately owned and not open to the public. You can view it only from the adjacent road. This restriction is important for your orientation: the site forms part of Bešeňová’s visible cultural surroundings, but it is not a publicly accessible sightseeing destination.
At the reservoir and across the meadows
A walk along the shore of the Vodná nádrž Bešeňová reservoir offers views of the water. The paved path along the shore is used by cyclists and inline skaters. Alongside the water park and the travertines, this provides another way to experience the surroundings at a leisurely pace. If you prefer varied landscapes, at Borovica nad Bešeňovou your view reaches a solitary pine tree standing in meadows above Bešeňová. From there, you can enjoy views of the surrounding countryside.
Through regional history by bicycle
A themed cycling route follows the traces of villages flooded by Liptovská Mara. Along the route, information is provided about the water-management project that permanently changed the development of the entire region. This adds a historical perspective to Bešeňová’s nature and water experiences: the landscape can be understood not only as a backdrop but also as the result of far-reaching changes.
If you would like to compare Bešeňová with other destinations, you can also find Kalameny, Lúčky, Ludrová, Likavka, Ivachnova, Ľubochňa, Liptovske Revuce and Liptovská Teplá.
