Lúčky: Thermal Water, Travertine and the Route to Veľký Choč

In Lúčky, warm spring water, distinctive travertine formations and the Lúčanský vodopád come together. At the edge of a travertine terrace, the Lúčanský vodopád drops into a pond as a 13-metre-high cascade waterfall. It has been protected as a national natural monument since 1974. Because of the warm springs flowing in from the spa, the waterfall does not freeze and can therefore be admired year-round.

Water, Springs and Travertine

AQUA-VITAL Park is open year-round. Its facilities include a heated outdoor relaxation pool with a water temperature of 28–32 °C, as well as an outdoor seated pool with healing mineral water at 36–38 °C. Six mineral springs are also located north of Lúčky. The Lúčanské travertíny give the area its own distinctive geological character: they include the plateau-like elevation of Skálie and the rock walls of Zápoly and Skaličky. The Lúčanské travertíny have been protected as a natural monument since 1975.

From the Waterfall to Veľký Choč

For a hike with a clearly marked route, there is the educational trail “Choč pre nás a my pre neho”. It begins in Lúčky, passes through the Choč National Nature Reserve, leads past the Lúčanský vodopád and the spa area, and continues through the valley and forest to the summit of Veľký Choč. The educational trail ends there. From the summit, there are panoramic views in all directions. Thus, the same route combines a waterfall, the spa surroundings, forest landscapes and a mountain summit.

Spa History and Cultural Traces

The spa resort Kúpele Lúčky developed more strongly as a place for treatment, relaxation and entertainment around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, following the revival of the springs around 1760. In the past, Lúčky was known above all for timber rafting. The figure of the raftman shaped the artistic work, life stories and style of many Lúčky residents.

The Roman Catholic Church of Povýšenia sv. Kríža in Lúčky was built from 1820 to 1824 and consecrated in 1825. Two paintings by Jozef Hanula have been preserved in the church. Among the paintings with which Alojz Fellegi decorated the church in the 1930s are depictions of the Stations of the Cross. The Lúčky Memorial House shows how people’s ancestors once lived in two traditionally furnished rooms. Upon request, the house is accessible during the opening hours of the tourist information centre.

Local Activities for Families and Active Visitors

The Lúčky Tourist Information Centre offers guided tours of Lúčky in traditional Lúčky dress and with Lúčky songs. Children and adults can enjoy educational and hands-on bee excursions at an apiary in Lúčky. Talks on sourdough baking, including tastings, are also offered. The Tourist Information Centre provides information about excursions and sights in Lúčky, as well as nearby caves, water parks and cycle paths. A marked cycle route runs by the DEO Chapel in Lúčky.
