Kalameny: Thermal Spring, Nature Trail and Liptovský hrad

Kalameny combines warm water, a varied nature trail and the history of a medieval castle. The place is particularly vivid where the path leads from the village center through meadows and forest to the ruins of Liptovský hrad. This makes it possible to combine nature, geology and culture in a single outing.

Thermal spring in the Kalamenská Valley

The thermal spring of Kalameny is located in the Kalamenská Valley in the Chočské vrchy, about 1 km north of Kalameny. It is an artificial borehole drilled in 1991–1992. The water is approximately 33 °C warm and feeds a pond that is used for public bathing year-round. The spring therefore has a distinct character of its own: it is not an abstract wellness concept, but a specific place in the valley where warm water and the landscape meet directly.

Nature trail from Kalameny to the castle ruins

The Kalameny–Liptovský hrad nature trail begins in the village center of Kalameny. It first leads to the thermal spring with its bathing pond, then across meadows and through the forest to the ruins of Liptovský hrad. The trail thus connects several themes without each experience being located in a separate place: the stations provide information about the history of Kalameny and Liptovský hrad, the local geology, the water cycle and the forest.

There are two documented reference points for reaching the beginning of the nature trail. The “Kalameny,,kult.dom” bus stop is located directly at the start of the trail. Those arriving by car will find a paid parking lot by the church in the village center. If you are planning your stay in Kalameny, you can therefore locate access to the nature trail using either the bus stop or the parking lot, without having to look for an additional starting point.

Liptovský hrad and the view from Sestrč

Liptovský hrad was built in the Middle Ages on the 993 m-high Sestrč. The castle was constructed in 1262 during the reign of King Béla IV and demolished in 1474 on the orders of King Matthias Corvinus. Today, the original foundations are open to the public. The area of Liptovský hrad is a national cultural monument; the excavated foundations are freely accessible to the public.

From Liptovský hrad, there are views of the Western Tatras, the Liptov Basin, the Low Tatras, part of the Great Fatra and the distinctive Veľký Choč. The historical destination of the nature trail thus gains a landscape dimension: the information about the castle, forest and geology is followed by views across several distinctive mountain and basin landscapes.

An additional look at the village

The local history also includes the Roman Catholic church in Kalameny with its interior paintings. It adds a cultural point of interest directly in the village to the nature trail.
