Stankovany – Hiking, Nature and Culture in Slovakia

Stankovany combines a striking mountain landscape, traditional architecture and small cultural discoveries. The village is an ideal base for a trip where you can combine hikes with regional history and special natural attractions. It is also convenient for getting there, as Stankovany is served by passenger trains on a main railway line.

Hiking on Šíp

Šíp is the highest peak in the Šípska Fatra. The ascent leads to viewpoints, a ridge with rock formations, mountain meadows and preserved woodland. The hike is considered moderately difficult. Steep sections are unsuitable for small children; otherwise, the tour is suitable for children. This makes it possible to assess the route according to the age and hiking experience of the family, without reducing the landscape to a single target group.

Specific figures help with planning the day: the circular hike to Šíp from Stankovany is 11.1 km long and includes 775 m of ascent and 775 m of descent. The stated duration is 4.25 hours. Anyone choosing this tour should therefore take the elevation gain into account just as much as the distance itself. Every year on the last Sunday in April, an ascent of Šíp takes place. In Podšíp, the programme includes folk music, beer from the barrel or Kofola, and goulash.

Nature Experiences and Trails

The Šíp area covers 302 hectares and has been designated a national nature reserve because of its rare plant and animal species. Another route leads from Stankovany via Ľubochňa into the Ľubochnianska Valley. It is up to 29 km in each direction, has an elevation difference of 180 m, and initially follows asphalt, but runs along a field track for the final kilometres. These details make it clear that excursion planning varies significantly depending on the route chosen.

The Močiar nature reserve lies in the immediate vicinity of Stankovany, next to the railway line. At the edge of the area is the Sírny medokýš spring, where visitors can draw mineral water. The Mädokýš pod lesom spring is also located about 2 km west of Stankovany. It can be reached on foot via a forest path, is covered by a small wooden shelter and is used by hikers for drinking. The surrounding area also has a reconstructed mineral bath that is used for swimming on warm summer days.

Podšíp and Stankovany’s Culture

Podšíp was designated a heritage zone in 1991. Around six houses with farm buildings have been preserved there, built in the traditional log construction style from round or hewn beams. Podšíp can only be reached on foot or by bicycle; the site is not accessible to motorised visitors. A blue-marked cycle route leads there from Stankovany, and there is also a green-marked hiking trail that passes the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The chapel was built in 1832 out of gratitude for the community’s survival of a cholera epidemic.

The Stankovská izba, a small municipal museum with old work tools, furniture and household items, provides a cultural highlight. Visitors are welcome and are asked to announce their visit at the municipal office. The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is also worth a closer look: the historicising Neo-Gothic building was constructed between 1898 and 1901 and has twenty modern stained-glass windows by Ladislav Záborský. It also contains an altar, statues and a Way of the Cross from Ferdinand Stuflesser’s Tyrolean carving workshop. Thus, alongside hiking, Stankovany also offers opportunities for a trip focused on local history, sacred art and traditional architecture.
