Lisková: Nature, Culture and Trails at Choč

Lisková combines unusual natural monuments, historical traces and marked trails with a location on the Žilina–Košice railway line. This makes the village an interesting destination if, when travelling in Slovakia, you do not want to consider nature experiences and culture separately. Particularly notable are Liskovská jaskyňa, the trails below Smrekov and several reminders of the village’s history.

Cave, rocks and geological traces

Liskovská jaskyňa is a national natural monument. Only the entrance is accessible to visitors. The first documented settlement of the Lengyel culture in the Liptov region was discovered in the cave. The cave therefore represents not only a striking natural feature, but also a history of early human use.

Above Liskovská jaskyňa stands the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. From there, views extend across the Low Tatras and the Western Tatras. Another natural monument is Skalná päsť, a six-metre-high rock below Mount Mních. The Mohylky Nature Reserve contains fossils of marine bivalves, nummulites and corals that are approximately 50 million years old. These places give the landscape different accents: the cave, rock formation and fossil remains each tell a different story about the surrounding area.

Hiking, cycling and climbing

A yellow-marked hiking trail begins in Lisková and leads to the trail junction below Smrekov. From this junction, marked trails continue to Sedlo Spuštiak saddle in the Choč National Nature Reserve and then towards Veľký Choč. This sequence is important when planning tours because the village is mentioned both as the starting point of a marked trail and as access to further mountain trails.

A red-marked cycling route also runs through Lisková. It leads westwards to Ružomberok or eastwards to Liptovská Teplá. Those who prefer to stay at a fixed climbing destination will find around 23 routes of varying difficulty in the Lisková climbing sector. Rock climbing has been officially permitted there since 1 December 2023.

Lisková also has its own cultural trail, the Stations of the Cross. It comprises 14 stations and ends at a small church dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary; a small chapel stands at the beginning. In this way, a religiously themed trail complements the village’s nature-oriented activities.

Local history in the centre

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Lisková was consecrated in 1936. Its free-standing Baroque tower comes from an older church that was demolished in 1934 because of its poor structural condition. In the centre of Lisková, on Vavra Šrobára Street next to the main road, stands the birthplace of Vavro Šrobár. A commemorative plaque installed there in 1937 on the occasion of his 70th birthday recalls the former resident.
