Ružomberok between World Heritage and mountain trails

Ružomberok combines historic sites, protected landscapes and marked trails to create a variety of travel experiences. This is particularly evident at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Vlkolínec, the natural monuments and the routes leading from the city centre into the mountain landscape. This allows you to focus your stay more on culture, viewpoints, hiking or a combination of these themes.

Nature and views around the city

The municipal area of Ružomberok lies within the protected zone of Nízke Tatry National Park. One of the most striking natural destinations is Brankovský vodopád, a national natural monument protecting a 55 m high waterfall. The Jazierske travertíny are also protected; this natural monument was placed under protection in 1952.

For mountain views, the Ružomberok–Sidorovo–Malinô Brdo route is a good choice. It offers views of the Liptovská kotlina, the Západné Tatry, the Chočské vrchy, the Nízke Tatry, the Veľká Fatra and the Malá Fatra. The summit of Malinné can be reached from the centre of Ružomberok via a blue-marked hiking trail through the Vlkolínske lúky. From the top, you can see the Malinô Brdo ski resort, the Chočské vrchy, the Západné Tatry, the Liptovská kotlina, as well as parts of the Vysoké Tatry and the Nízke Tatry.

Vlkolínec and routes through cultural history

Vlkolínec is a district of the city of Ružomberok and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. The site comprises 43 almost perfectly preserved historic farmsteads, the 1875 Church of Navštívenia Panny Márie, a bell tower built in 1770 and a school building. The Biely Potok–Vlkolínec–Hrabovo route provides access to this UNESCO World Heritage site and its reserve of traditional folk architecture.

This route begins in Biely Potok at the “Ružomberok,Biely Potok,pri moste” bus stop or at the “Pri moste” MHD stop. Another route, Ružomberok–Sidorovo–Malinô Brdo, leads from the centre via the Calvary of Ružomberok and the Sidorovo ridge to the Malinô Brdo ski resort. At the end of the route, seasonal city buses operate from Ružomberok.

Squares, museum and industrial heritage

In the city centre lies Námestie Andreja Hlinku, a historic square with its original narrow medieval plot structure. Its basic layout was created around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The U37 006 monument commemorates the historic U37 006 steam locomotive, whose train supplied a field hospital in Korytnica with provisions during the Slovak National Uprising. The monument is located a few dozen metres from Ružomberok railway and bus stations.

The Liptovské múzeum in Ružomberok is currently closed for renovation. Its collection comprises almost 200,000 objects. This current notice is therefore just as important for orientation as the historic squares, the routes to Vlkolínec and the trails to the viewpoints.
