Liptovske Revuce – Revúcka Valley, Nature and Folk Culture

Liptovské Revúce lies in a landscape where mountain nature, protected habitats and a distinct folk culture exist side by side. The Revúcka Valley runs from north to south and forms the boundary between the Low Tatras and the Greater Fatra. The Revúca River rises below Krížna, flows through the valley and joins the Váh in Ružomberok. This provides a range of experiences for planning a trip: a signposted educational trail, alpine paths, natural monuments, historic churches and traditional crafts and cuisine.

Čierny Kameň Educational Trail

One particularly clearly described hiking experience is the Čierny Kameň Educational Trail. It begins in Stredná in Liptovské Revúce and ends in Vyšná near Konštrukta. The route passes through the NPR Čierny kameň nature reserve and over the Ploská saddle. The educational trail is 9.5 kilometres long and takes approximately five hours; eight information boards or stations are located along the route.

The trail is self-guided, can be walked in both directions and is suitable as a loop trail in summer and winter. The listed access point is the SAD bus stop Liptovské Revúce, Stredná–požiarna zbrojnica. This distinguishes Čierny Kameň from a purely summit route: the trail combines a specific route with information about the protected mountain landscape and can be explored without a guided tour.

Borišov, Ploská and Teplý potok

The natural area includes the 450-hectare Borišov state nature reserve. It protects communities in up to four forest vegetation zones. From Ploská, a trail leads to Chata pod Borišovom, a mountain hut open year-round at a junction of several marked hiking trails. The traditional ascent of Borišov takes place every year on 30 December.

A different landscape is presented by the Prielom Teplého potoka gorge section in the Teplá Valley. It is approximately 180 metres long and up to 20 metres deep. Karst relief, travertine and erosional forms created by the river shape the section; the protected area also includes the 2.4-metre-high lower waterfall of Teplý potok. Prielom Teplého potoka has been protected as a natural monument since 1984 and lies within the cadastral area of Liptovské Revúce. It can be reached from the Teplé forest lodge via a yellow-marked hiking trail.

Alpine Route and Secured Mountain Trail

For a longer mountain excursion, there is the route from Liptovské Revúce (Výšné) to Krížna. It is 15 kilometres long, takes six hours and is classified as a moderately difficult alpine hike and ski touring route. For ski touring from 15 December to 30 April, avalanche safety equipment is specified as necessary equipment.

The Ferrata Dve veže was also opened in Záhorovo in Liptovské Revúce as a secured trail through challenging mountain terrain. Fixed safety cables and iron steps are among its described features. The two options therefore represent different forms of mountain activity: a designated alpine route and a secured trail through rocky terrain.

Folk Architecture, Church and Local Traditions

Vyšná Revúca is the oldest part of the municipality and preserves its best-maintained folk architecture. This includes wooden houses dating from 1800–1870 and an 18th-century chapel. A characteristic embroidery tradition of Liptovské Revúce is the sewn lace or cutwork embroidery known as “garatová ruža”. The shepherding-influenced folk culture of Ovenálie has also survived to the present day almost unchanged.

An important historic building is the Church of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, “Kostol Očisťovania Panny Márie”. It was built in 1819 in the Baroque Classicist style on the site of an older wooden church dating from 1694. The interior contains a wall painting from 1912–1913 by Jozef Hanula and a Classical main altar dating from around 1820.

Revúcke halušky is part of the local food and festival culture: a 28-year-old local tradition featuring craft markets, folklore, music, regional dishes, children’s activities and a competition in cooking and eating bryndza halušky. In this way, the municipality complements its mountain and nature experiences with concrete forms of regional culture.
